As economic sanctions against the country as a result of the Ukraine crisis remain in place, the Russian new car market accentuates its decline further in August to a dismal 26% year-on-year drop at 172,015 registrations. Brand-wise, below Lada down a harsh 32% and Kia down 20%, Hyundai (-6%) and Toyota (-8%) both gain one spot on July to rank #3 and #4 respectively, overtaking Renault (-18%) which however remains #2 year-to-date. In the Top 25, only Mercedes (+3%), UAZ (+1%), Mazda (stable), Lexus (+13%) and Great Wall (+5%) don’t lose ground.
In the models ranking, the Lada Granta behaves better than the market at -21% to 6.9% market share vs. 6% year-to-date, ahead of an ever-impressive Hyundai Solaris actually up 6% on August 2013 to see its market share go from 3.7% one year ago to 5.3% this month. Below the Kia Rio down 16% in third place, the Renault Logan gains one further spot on July to land in 4th position, simply the nameplate’s best-ever ranking since BSCB started following Russian sales monthly in March 2010. The Logan overtakes the Duster (#5) to become the brand’s best-seller in Russia this month.
Notice also the Nissan Almera back up 13 spots on July to #8 with 3,822 sales and 2.2%, an all-time high ranking in Russia for the model, also reached last February and April. The Toyota Camry maintains itself at a high level at #11 thanks to sales down just 1% as does the Skoda Rapid at #19 with 2,430 units and 1.4%. Finally, we witness this month a rare appearance of the UAZ Patriot inside Russia’s Top 25 best-sellers at #24 with 1,963 sales and 1.1%. The Patriot finished 2013 at #31.
