New passenger car sales in Hungary are up a solid 14% year-on-year in August to 4,797 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 43,926 units, up 20% on 2013. However keep in mind that this growth is almost exclusively fuelled by demand from businesses and not private buyers. No less that 78% of new cars in Hungary were registered by businesses in August. For example, 87% of Ford sales were to businesses, 83% of Volkswagen, 96% of Fiat, 92% of Skoda and 79% of Renault, but ‘only’ 56% of Dacia. Unofficially, re-export continues to also play a key role in ensuring the Hungarian new car market is on the up. The Ford Focus is the best-selling model in the country in August thanks to 245 sales and 5.1%, above the Skoda Octavia at 222 units and 4.6% – still leader year-to-date with 2,651 sales and 6% share. The Suzuki SX4 is up to #3, the Fiat 500 up to #6 and Ford Mondeo up to #9. (Note the table below includes LCVs)
