New car sales in Canada are up a shy 0.4% year-on-year in January to 95,796 registrations. Ford remains the most popular brand in the country in spite of sales down 12% to 14,055 sales and is followed like over the FY2013 by Toyota up 12% to 9,328 units, Honda up 10% to 6,820 and Hyundai down 9% to 6,704 while Chevrolet crumbles down 28% to #6 and Nissan is up 37% to #8. Notice also Subaru and Mercedes both up 28% to #14 and #15 respectively, Infiniti up 41% to #22, Fiat up 82% to #24, Lincoln up 73% to #25, Land Rover up 38% to #26 and Maserati up 213% to 25 sales.
Infiniti sales are up 41% year-on-year in Canada this month.
Model-wise, below the traditional Ford F-Series (-6%), Dodge RAM (+1%) and Honda Civic (+32%), we find the Dodge Grand Caravan up 3 spots on December to #4, the Mazda3 up 38% year-on-year to #7 and the Toyota RAV4 up a huge 221% to #9. Further down, the Dodge Journey is up 11 ranks on last month to #11, the Nissan Rogue up 127% on January 2013 to #13 and the Jeep Cherokee up one further spot to #17.
But the big question this month in Canada is: do we finally have a winner with the Dodge Dart? Stuck beyond the Top 60 in the USA, the Dart is back up to #23 in Canada for the second time in the last 3 months, this time up 106% year-on-year. A couple of more months at this level and we might need to revise our opinion about the success (or lack thereof) of Dodge’s compact car…
