For the first time ever on BestSellingCarsBlog, I can share with you specific sales data by models for Wales, thanks to SMMT. Even better: this will now be a monthly update on BSCB! Keep in mind this data is already included in the overall UK figures published each month, this is a zoom in. First the big numbers: Wales is by far the best performing nation in the UK, with new car sales up a huge 20% year-on-year in June to 7,446 registrations and up 17% year-to-date to 42,396 units. Like in the UK overall (and in every nation in the UK for that matter), the Ford Fiesta is the best-seller here, but its market share is much higher in Wales: at 7.7% in June and 8.5% year-to-date.
The Top 4 best-sellers are identical to the UK ranking both in June and year-to-date: the Ford Focus is #2, followed by the Vauxhall Corsa and Astra. The rest of the ranking confirms the Welsh market is a little more skewed towards superminis: the VW Polo sells better than the Golf here at #5 in June and #6 year-to-date vs. #7 in both rankings for the Golf. But the biggest surprise is at #8 year-to-date and #10 in June: the Suzuki Alto grabs 1.7% of the Welsh market whereas it only ranked 95th in the UK overall during the Full Year 2012! Finally, notice the Ford Mondeo is up to #7 here in June vs. #21 in the UK in 2012.
