In January the Emirati new car market grows at exactly the same rate year-on-year as over the Full Year 2012: +27% to 28,682 registrations. Like in Saudi Arabia, the Toyota Corolla takes the lead of the models ranking this month thanks to 1,742 sales and 6.1%, potentially due to the current generation hitting runout mode in the wake of the arrival of the new model later in the year. The Toyota Prado is also very strong, up 3 spots on December to #2 at 1,453 units and 5.1%, while the Toyota Land Cruiser rounds up the podium with 1,405 sales and 4.9%.

#1 in 2012, the Toyota Hilux is surprisingly down to 4th place this month at 1,162 units and 4.1%. Notice also the Mitsubishi L200 up 3 spots on December to #6, the Mitsubishi Pajero up 6 to #8, the BMW X6 up a huge 56 ranks to #22, Nissan Micra up 70 to #24, Toyota FJ Cruiser up 65 to #32, Kia Cerato up 53 to #33 and the Toyota Avalon up from outside the Top 200 in December to #67 this month thanks to the new generation of the model.

Australia: Top models/brands over the last 10 years in graphs

BSCB Australia Top 5 2002 2012The Top 5 best-selling models in Australia over the last decade (annual volume).

* Click on the image above to see the large version of the graph. Many thanks to Josh *

Today I have the pleasure to introduce you all to BestSellingCarsBlog’s first graphs, thanks to Josh Gregg. Given I am based in Australia I thought it would be appropriate to have this first graph illustrate a striking trend in this country over the last decade: the fall of large cars like the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon, to the benefit of compact ones like the Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla. The first graph (above) features the Top 5 models over the period – cumulatively, not each year’s Top 5.

BSCB Australia 2002 2012 variation2002-2012 sales variation for the Top 5 models in Australia

The Commodore is down from 88,478 sales in 2002 to just 30,532 in 2012 (-74%!), losing its pole position to the Mazda3 in 2011 after 15 years of domination. Similarly, the Ford Falcon falls from 73,220 units in 2003 to 14,036 in 2012. On the opposite, the Mazda3 is up from 15,941 sales in 2002 (when it was called the Mazda 323) to a record 44,128 units in 2012, a 177% increase over the decade. You will notice the 2nd graph represents the % variation for these models between 2002 and 2012.

Mazda3 Australia 2012Mazda3

Interestingly, the Toyota Corolla peaked at 47,901 sales and 2008 and has seen stabilised around 40,000 annual units, in effect missing the opportunity to take the lead of the Australian market as early as 2009. Over the decade it is up a modest 11% while the Toyota Hilux displays relentless growth over the period, coming from 22,515 units in 2002 to 42,956 in 2008, and lodging an overall 81% increase over the decade.

BSCB Australia Top 6 manuf 2003 2012Market share over the last decade of the Top 6 manufacturers in 2012

The third graph shows the cumulative market share of the Top 6 manufacturers in the country over the last decade. This was calculated by adding up sales for each year since 2003 for each Top 6 manufacturer in the 2012 ranking. No surprises: Toyota leads with 21%, followed by Holden at 14% and Ford at 11%. But perhaps the most striking graphs of all is the 4th one (below) showing percentage variation for 2012’s Top 6 manufacturers compared to 2003. Hyundai is at an unbelievable +196% (tripling its volume over the period) while Mazda doubles its sales at +95%, Holden is down 35% and Ford down 29%…

The original World Full Year 2012 Top 1000 is here

As expected, Japanese models are very well represented in the 2012 worldwide models ranking, starting with the #1 spot held by the Toyota Corolla with 1,097,132 sales. Then we find the Toyota Camry at #4 and 797,466 units, the Nissan Tiida/Versa/Sunny at #8 with 774,846 sales, Toyota Yaris/Vios at #12 and 708,619 units and the Honda Civic at #14 with 656,164 sales.

Suzuki Swift DZire World 2012Suzuki Swift DZire

As we go through the most successful Japanese models in the world, it’s interesting to notice different models relying on different markets, showing how omnipresent across the planet Nippon carmakers have become. If the Camry and Honda Accord lodge a big part of their sales in the USA, the Toyota Hilux at #15 draws from South-East Asia, Australia and South America while the Suzuki Swift/Dzire at #19 relies mainly on India and the Toyota Avanza/Daihatsu Xenia at #64 gets the bulk of its worldwide sales from Indonesia…

Mitsubishi ASX World 2012Mitsubishi ASX

Notice also the Toyota RAV4 at #11 Japanese and #31 overall, a ranking that should improve in 2013 with the arrival of the new generation across worldwide dealerships, the Toyota Prius at #13 and #38, Toyota Prius C at #18 and #56, Nissan Qashqai/Dualis at #20 and #60 and the Mitsubishi ASX at #57 and #187, one of the best-selling Japanese small SUV cars in the world.

Sponsored post: Carrying out an engine rebuild

Picture courtesy of and Jeffrey Friedl

If your car engine needs rebuilding, you can be looking at a very high bill for the work to be carried out. With parts and labour, the price is going to be extremely high before the job is even started and you may also be faced with the prospect of being without your car for a lengthy period of time. This may force you to pay for alternative transport methods or it could put a strain on your everyday life.

Unfortunately, if your vehicle does need an engine rebuild, there are very few options available to you but a growing number of people are carrying out this work for themselves. An engine rebuild is not something that should be considered by everyone, there are obviously a number of things that people need in order to be able to carry out this work successfully.

There is a need for the person to be properly skilled and experienced in this line of work. There are many car repair jobs that can be carried out by inexperienced people but an engine rebuild is not one of them. It can also be helpful to have someone else around to provide support, although this is not always necessary.

You need the right tools for the job. In order to be able to carry out an engine rebuild properly, there is a need to have enough space and a good working condition. This means a well-ventilated room that should be lit sufficiently to ensure that you can see what you are doing. There is also a strong need to have the correct tools to be able to carry out the job and make it easier on yourself.

One of the most important tools or pieces of equipment you can have when it comes to rebuilding an engine would be an engine crane. There is a range of specialist engine cranes to choose from, so no matter what budget you have available, there will be something to make life easier for you.

These cranes lift the engine from the car but then support the engine in the air, which allows you to properly remove or disconnect wires and hoses between the engine and the frame of the car. This can be a very difficult and sometimes impossible task when the engine is situated in the car, so having it held in mid-air is a great benefit.

A number of these cranes will be on casters which means that the engine can rolled away from the car, providing more space for you to work on it.

Is the US really downsizing?

2014 Cadillac CTS USA March 20132014 Cadillac CTS: the right size?

This article is brought to you by

One thing you notice when you visit the U.S is the size of the cars on the roads. America is known for its big and bold vehicles and if you live there you would want to buy a car that doesn’t get overlooked on the highway. From the large cars that are associated with executives such as the BMW 5 and 7 series, Audi A6 and A8 models and the Cadillac XTS, to of course the SUV, CUVs and pick up trucks, bigger has always certainly been better. But recent figures from the U.S suggest that this may be a changing trend, with small car sales on the rise at the start of 2013.

The February unit sales for the U.S provided by Motor Intelligence show that the number of ‘small’ car purchases is up by 5% on February 2012 statistics. Additionally, the figures show a significant drop in the purchases of large autos, with an 80% decrease on cars such as the high end BMW, Audi, and Cadillacs. So is the U.S really downsizing when it comes to purchasing new and used cars?

Well, not exactly. For sure the decrease in large car sales since last February is a real eye opener, but despite small car sales increasing, this is really a sign that that people are downsizing in class rather than size. It appears that the decreases in large car sales may have spilled over to the light duty truck segment with sales increases in pickup, cross-over, and SUVs segments right across the board. This could simply be the affect of downgrading in difficult economic times in order to save money, but you can bet your bottom dollar that it will take more than a depression for America to compromise size!
