Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the Caribbean Sea and car sales are counted separately. New car sales are up 8% year-on-year in December to 12,432 registrations, bringing the Full Year 2012 total to 102,550 units, up 9% on 2011. December highlights include the Nissan Sentra solid at #8, Jeep Grand Cherokee up to #11, Mitsubishi Outlander up 29 spots to #12, Ford Econoline up 20 to #14, Hyundai Sonata up 18 to #15 and the Dodge Caravan up to #16 vs. #55 in the Full Year, on which this post will focus.

Hyundai Accent

The Toyota Yaris is the best-selling car in Puerto Rico in 2012 thanks to 8,768 sales and 8.5% share and Toyota delivers a 1-2 with the Corolla taking the second spot at 6,634 units and 6.5%. The Hyundai Accent rounds up the podium with 4,309 sales and 4.2%, followed by the Nissan Versa at 3,946 units and 3.8% and the Mitsubishi Lancer with 3,196 sales and 3.1%. Yes that’s right, 5 Japanese/Korean models in the Top 5. But wait there’s more: 9 in the Top 10 and 13 in the Top 15… Not particularly fans of American cars, Puerto Rican consumers? It would seem so…

Chevrolet Sonic

The only yankies to survive are the Jeep Wrangler at #6 and 2,884 units and the Ford Fiesta at #14 with 1,805 sales. Pretty meagre. Unless you count the Ford Escape at #16, Ford Edge at #19 and Jeep Grand Cherokee at #20. USA’s all categories winner (at home) the Ford F-Series, is only #31 and the best-selling Chevrolet, the Sonic, is…#78! Back to the Top 10 and let’s salute the great performances of the Kia Rio at #7, Suzuki SX4 at #8 and Nissan Rogue at #10.

Toyota Tacoma

Further down, amazingly the Toyota Tacoma is the most popular pick-up in the territory at #11, beating all US models, the Mitsubishi ASX (sold as Outlander Sport in the US) ranks #13, the Toyota Prius C is #17 and already the best-seller in the Prius family, the Suzuki Grand Vitara is #25 and the Hyundai Veloster is #32.
