Exceptional year for new car sales in New Zealand, up a whopping 19% on 2011 to reach 100,794 registrations, only the third time since 1990 that the market is above 100,000 units. Thanks to the arrival of the new generation and very strong sales to rental companies towards the end of the year, the Toyota Corolla is the most popular model in New Zealand for the 5th consecutive year with 5,324 sales and 5.3% share, up 28% year-on-year. In fact the podium is unchanged on 2011 with the Toyota Hilux at #2 with 4,182 units and 4.1% (+34%) and the Suzuki Swift rounding up the podium at 3,277 sales and 3.3%, up 13%.
Thanks to Autotalk, for the first time on BestSellingCarsBlog I am able to share with you a New Zealand models ranking with a bit more depth: up to #40! Excellent performances of utes (pick-up trucks) this year: below the Hilux, the Ford Ranger brilliantly takes the 4th spot at 2,815 units, it even led the overall ranking for the first time in April and did it again in July. The SUV segment is now the most popular in the country with a 26% share and this is materialised by the arrival of the Holden Captiva at #6, which means that the first time in decades, the Captiva is Holden’s best-seller and not the Commodore, down 3 spots on 2011 to #7…
Further down, the Ford Focus is #10 like in neighbouring Australia, the Toyota Highlander ranks at a shiny 13th place with 1,799 sales, the Hyundai Santa Fe is #14, the Ford Mondeo #16 (whereas it has always struggled in Australia), the Ford Falcon is down to a horrid #24 and the Great Wall V-Series up to an outstanding 32nd position vs. #49 in Australia. Brand-wise, Toyota tops the market for the 25th consecutive year with 21.1% share, ahead of Ford (11%), Holden (9.4%), Hyundai (7.6%) and Nissan (6.3%).
