It had to end one day: after an amazing 33 consecutive months of year-on-year growth (no interruption since March 2010!), the Mexican new car market is down 4% year-on-year in December to 110,849 registrations. This is still the second highest monthly figure in the last 5 years after December 2011… The Full Year total for 2012 is 987,747 units, up 9% on 2011 and the best result since 2008. The Chevrolet Aveo maintains its grip on the models ranking and is in the Top spot for the 13th consecutive month thanks to 7,929 sales and 7.2%, followed by the Nissan Versa at 5.5% (+1) and the VW Clasico at 5% (-1).
Last month the new generation had already pushed the Nissan Sentra to its highest ranking since January 2011 (#6), and in December it’s up a further two ranks to reach #4 at 4,201 units and 3.8%, its best volume, ranking and share since I started getting access to monthly data for Mexico in 2010… The Nissan March is also in uncharted territory, breaking into the Mexican Top 5 for the very first time at #5 with 2,958 sales and 2.7%, which is also its volume record in the country. The Honda CR-V is up 5 spots to #6, its highest ranking since last May, while the Nissan Tsuru is down to #7, its lowest ranking in over a decade.
