* See the other BSCB articles about the Subaru XV in Switzerland by clicking on the title! *

A few days ago I had the privilege of being interviewed by Alex Helmick from World Radio Switzerland about the surprising success of the Subaru XV there. I expand on the reasons behind that success and the trends currently impacting the Swiss new car market which have resulted in the XV grabbing the pole position in Switzerland in August in a historical move.

You can listen to the interview here: Matt’s interview on World Radio Switzerland

Many thanks to Alex Helmick for reaching out to me, facilitating this interview and adding lots of links to BestSellingCarsBlog on the World Radio Switerland website 🙂

Japan by version August 2012: Mitsu Mirage & Toyota Auris up

Toyota Auris

* See the Top 100 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Austin *

As usual after exploring the passenger car Top 30 and the Kei car Top 20 in Japan, we have a more detailed look at overall August sales split by version and with Light Commercial Vehicles added. This is to see how the Toyota Prius Alpha and Honda Fit Shuttle perform among other things. And once again this little game is won by the Toyota Aqua at a very respectable 19,076 sales, with the August podium identical to last month’s: the Honda NBOX is #2 at 17,308 units and the Toyota Prius #3 with 15,670 sales.

Mitsubishi Mirage

Both the Suzuki Wagon R and Daihatsu Tanto/Exe are up one spot to #4 and #5 respectively, while the Honda Fit is down two to #6. Excellent performances of the Suzuki Every Wagon/Carry, up 3 ranks to #7 and 10,733 units, of the Nissan Serena up 7 to #8 and of the Suzuki Alto/Capin up two to #9.

The original 1957 Toyoace

Further down, notice the Toyota Porte appearing at #17, its twin the Toyota Spade up to #18, the Mazda CX-5 up 11 spots to #25, the Suzuki Swift up 15 to #26 and the Toyoace up to #58. There are two very significant newcomers in the Top 60: the Mitsubishi Mirage goes from just 5 sales in July to 1,392 and #56 this month while the Toyota Auris, now that the 2nd generation is available in Japan, lands directly at #59 with 1,139 units.

New Caledonia May-August 2012: Toyota Hilux sovereign

Toyota Hilux

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Yves *

After a 4 month-hiatus,  new car sales data for French territory New Caledonia are back on BSCB thanks to Yves. On the podium over the last couple of years but out of the Top 10 in early 2012 because of the Thai floods, the Toyota Hilux dominates the models ranking in New Caledonia over the May-August 2012 period with 238 sales. #1 over the first 4 months of 2012, the Dacia Duster is down to a still remarkable 2nd place with 171 units sold over the period, adding up to 380 in 2012 which should still secure it the year-to-date pole position.

The cousins Kia Sportage and Hyundai ix35 hold a brilliant respective 3rd and 4th spots with 131 and 127 sales, and are followed by the Renault Clio, Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 206+. #1 over the last 3 years, the Ford Ranger is in changeover mode, with the new generation arriving shortly in New Caledonia. As a result it is down to an unusual #8 over the period. Notice the Great Wall Wingle pointing its bonnet at #10 thanks to 61 sales.

Africa: Hyundai ahead of Toyota in 5 major countries!

The Hyundai Elantra was elected 2012 Car of the Year in South Africa

* See more info by clicking on the title! *

Just as Hyundai kick starts its brand new Brazilian manufacturing plant in Piracicaba, Sao Paulo with an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles and targeting 10% of the local market with the made-in-Brazil-for-Brazilians Hyundai HB20, extremely rare sales figures for Africa were released by The Korea Herald. Hyundai has been competing closely with Toyota to become #1 in Africa, posting monthly sales growth rates of about 50% on average in the region.

Hyundai is currently #2 in Africa with about 12% share of the continent’s market with Toyota leader at 14.7%. However, The Korea Herald says Hyundai has surpassed Toyota in five major countries: Algeria, Angola, Morocco, Egypt and South Africa. For Algeria, Morocco and Egypt, if you are a regular BSCB reader this will come as no surprise to you as sales figures are regularly available and show clearly Hyundai doing much better than Toyota there. This is mainly thanks to models whose previous generations are still on sale at low prices: the Verna, a 2000 Accent, is #1 in Egypt and was #3 in Algeria in 2011, while the 2004 Hyundai Atos was #2 there.

The Hyundai Verna is #1 in Egypt

For Angola this is new news to me as this market is still very secretive when it comes to car sales figures. The big surprise is South Africa, simply because Hyundai oddly does not release any sales figures for that country… which is a shame because Toyota sold 7,325 Passenger Cars in South Africa in August (#2 behind Volkswagen) and 4,622 Light Commercial Vehicles (#1 ahead of Chevrolet) for a total of 11,947 vehicles overall, placing it #1 well ahead of Volkswagen at 9,898 units. This means if The Korea Herald are correct, Hyundai is simply #1 in South Africa, by the largest car market in Africa!

Another piece of interesting information released by The Korea Herald is the fact that sales in the above five nations account for more than 80% of all automobile sales on the African continent, which means Hyundai is putting itself in a very good position to grab the overall lead in Africa in the near future.

Thailand Pick-ups August 2012: Ford Ranger & Mazda BT-50 up

* See the Top 8 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Austin *

Pick-up truck sales in Thailand are a good indication of the future success of these vehicles worldwide, straight from the country where they are all produced and available first. In August a massive 53,180 pick-ups were sold in Thailand alone, confirming its status of ‘Pick-up kingdom’… The entire August models ranking is identical to the 2012 year-to-date one, however market shares vary greatly. The Toyota Hilux, although still in charge, sees its advantage over the Isuzu D-Max melt from 7,628 in July to just 2,412 this month, at 19,791 sales and 37.2% share vs. 17,379 and 32.7% for the Isuzu. Year-to-date, the Hilux dominates at 39.6% vs. 31.2%.

The Mitsubishi Triton retreats to more reasonable levels at 9.2% in August vs. 10.6% year-to-date, followed by the Chevrolet Colorado also slightly weaker this month. Both the Mazda BT-50 at 3,129 sales and 5.9% vs. 4.5% year-to-date and the Ford Ranger with 2,724 units and 5.1% vs. 3.5% year-to-date are punching way above their waist and could continue to improve over the next couple of months.

France 1-17 September 2012: Peugeot 208 & Citroen C4 in shape

Peugeot 208. Picture by L’Argus, all rights reserved.

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

The French new car market is down by ‘just’ 7% over the period, thanks to good performances of Peugeot (+26%), Citroen (+11%), Toyota (+5%), #2 foreign brand behind Volkswagen ahead of Audi (+11%). Renault suffers at -28% and Dacia is down to #9 at -6%. The Peugeot 208 is head and shoulders above the competition and grabs 5.7% of the market (vs. 6.4% in August) with an almost 1,000 units advantage over the Renault Clio 3 living its last instants at #2 with 2,017 sales and 3.8% (-50%). The Renault Scenic rounds up the podium with 1,767 units and 3.3%.

Citroen C4. Picture by L’Argus, all rights reserved.

It is followed by the Renault Megane (3.2%), Citroen C3 (both at 3.2%) and Peugeot 3008 while the Citroen C4 is up to a shiny 7th place which, if held until month-end, would be the highest ranking delivered by the 2nd generation of the model. The VW Polo and Golf, both in decline, round up the Top 10 which doesn’t contain any Dacias this month…

Pakistan August 2012: Suzuki Mehran up in disrupted market

Suzuki Mehran (Indian version). Picture by njyo, all rights reserved.

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

Normally I only update Pakistan new car sales data every quarter as the market is usually very stable, but these last couple of months have been so disruptive it deserved an early catch-up. Note the data, provided by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association, is restricted to models produced locally, however this is a pretty accurate representation of the most popular cars in the country as imports are very limited. In August, new car sales are down 14% year-on-year to 10,385 units. Over the first 8 months of 2012 total sales stand at 118,015 units, still up a healthy 9% year-on-year.

In July, local production of the normally very popular Suzuki Alto stopped, as well as that of the Daihatsu Cuore, with the Honda Civic stopping in August. It is still unclear whether this is a temporary halt or a definitive stop (if you live in Pakistan and/or have more information on this please get in touch) but the certainty is it has already had an impact on the models ranking, with the above models all but disappearing from the ladder. The Toyota Corolla stays on top with 2,800 sales and 27% in August but with production transfers from the Alto, the antediluvian Suzuki Mehran is up to a fantastic 25.2% share this month thanks to 2,615 units sold.

Other changes include the Suzuki Cultus shooting up to third place with 1,173 sales and 11.3% vs. #6 and 7.6% year-to-date, the Honda City up to #4 at 1,0340 units and 10% share (after ranking #3 in July) vs. #7 with 4.3% year-to-date, and the Suzuki Swift up to 5.9% share vs. 4.3% year-to-date. Reversely, the Suzuki Bolan is down from #2 in June to #5 in August and the Suzuki Ravi is down to #6.

Spain LCV July 2012: Renault Kangoo and Citroen Nemo shine

Citroen Nemo

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

In July, sales of new ‘derivados’ (Light Commercial Vehicles derived from Passenger Cars) are down an alarming 24% year-on-year vs. -17% for the Passenger Car market. This brings the year-to-date total to 27,353 units, down 26% on 2011. The Renault Kangoo reclaims the top spot after leading in May thanks to 730 sales for a strong 19.3% market share, but still ranks #2 year-to-date at 4,831 units and 17.7% below the Citroen Berlingo, down to #3 in July, at 6,318 and 23.1% and above the Peugeot Partner, up to #2 this month, at 4,723 and 17.3%. Notice also the good scores of the Fiat Doblo at #7 and 5.5% and the Citroen Nemo at #8 and 4.1%.

China: Volkswagen Who’s who

VW Polo Jinqu

* See the entire article by clicking on the title! *

In 2012 Volkswagen has gone on a new model frenzy in China, replacing a few designs that were up to 30 years old in one single swoop. Problem is, the entire range is starting to look very similar and it gets relatively confusing, partly because Volkswagen operates through two separate joint-ventures there, one with SAIC Motor (Shanghai Volkswagen) and one with First Automobile Works (FAW Volkswagen). So I thought I’d give you a quick update/cheat sheet as these changes will impact both Chinese and worldwide models rankings in the near future…

Can you guess all models above? Answers are at the very end of the article.

VW Polo

At the bottom of the range size-wise we have the Polo, manufactured by Shanghai Volkswagen, with the last two generations sold jointly in China. The current one under the name ‘Polo’, however the sedan version has just been discontinued – you’ll find out why below, and the previous one as the Polo Jinqu/Jinqing whom we know as the Polo Vivo in South Africa.

VW Jetta

The 1984 second generation VW Jetta was launched in China by FAW VW in 1991. It has survived until now with a couple of minor facelifts and will stay in production as a taxi. The Chinese 2013 VW Jetta was launched on September 1 at the Chengdu Auto Show. It uses the PQ25 platform of the current generation Polo and is very close to it design-wise, hence the recent discontinuation of the current gen VW Polo sedan in China… And that’s when everything starts to get confusing, so bear with me and hold on tight…

VW Santana

In 1985, the Shanghai Volkswagen Santana was the first passenger car manufactured in China. It was met with tremendous success and produced at over 3 million units in 25 years, staying mostly unchanged until now (more details here). The more modern VW Santana Vista was added to the range in 2008. Both models will continue to be produced as taxis but will be replaced for consumers in late 2012 by an all-new design, also based on the current generation Polo’s PQ25 platform and looking relatively similar to the 2013 FAW VW Jetta with which it now competes…

VW Bora

Until 2008, the VW Bora sold in China by FAW Volkswagen was a facelifted version of the European 1998 VW Bora, a model still sold in Mexico as the VW Clasico. Since 2008, a China-specific design is on sale in the country. The new generation Bora has just started production on September 10 but its design has somewhat lost its distinctiveness in the VW range…
