Thanks to myk we have access to a Filipino monthly models ranking for the first time on BSCB! In June the new car market in the Philippines is up a very healthy 20% year-on-year to 16,609 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 88,673 units, up 8% on 2011.  No surprises in pole position: the Toyota Vios stays on top with 1,438 sales and 7,763 year-to-date for a 8.8% share. The Mitsubishi Montero delivers an excellent month in June and manages to climb into 2nd place with 1,201 units, above the Toyota Innova at 1,122. It stays #3 year-to-date though at 6.9% vs. 7.9%.

Hyundai Eon with some colourful locals

Below the Toyota Fortuner at 973 units, the Hyundai Accent impresses: up to #5 with 607 sales vs. #8 year-to-date. The other great performers this month are either Korean or models that had been handicapped by the Thai floods and are now catching on: the Toyota Hilux is up to #9 (vs. #12 year-to-date), the Hyundai Grand Starex is up to #11 (vs. #21), the Kia Rio at #12 (vs. #20), the Honda CR-V up to #19 (vs. #25) and the Toyota Camry is up to #22 (vs. #37).

Clearly the locals are having heaps of fun with the Eon!

Three newcomers are starting to make their mark in the Philippines: the most successful of them so far is the Hyundai Eon imported from India, up to a brilliant 24th place with 114 sales in June vs. #59 year-to-date. The Mazda CX-5 is up to #35 with 68 units this month (vs. #63) and the Subaru XV is up to #38 with 58 sales vs. #57 in the 2012 year-to-date ranking.

World: Toyota produces 200 millionth vehicle

The Model G1 Truck was the very first Toyota, produced in August 1935.

* See the Top 10 best-selling Toyotas in Australia ever by clicking on the title! *

Yesterday Toyota announced it had produced its 200 millionth vehicle after 76 years and 11 months of existence. The very first Toyota was a model G1 truck produced in August 1935 by Toyoda Automatic Loom Works Ltd’s automotive department, which was spun off and later became Toyota Motor Corporation.

The 1936 AA was Toyota’s very first passenger car

Toyota’s first passenger car was the AA model which started production in 1936. Unlike other Japanese manufacturers, the AA was a proper Toyota model and not a licence of a Western car. The most produced nameplate over the world and still the best-selling car on the planet is the Toyota Corolla with over 39 million units spat out of various Toyota factories since 1966.

Almost 40 million Toyota Corollas have been produced since the nameplate’s launch in 1966.

Out of the 200 million Toyotas produced, 155 were in Japan and 45 million in other countries. It took 50 years for Toyota to produce its first 50 million vehicles, a milestone it passed in October 1985, but only 11 to reach 100 million (January 1997), 9 to reach 150 million (January 2006) and just 6 to produce its last 50 million vehicles to reach 200 million in June 2012.

1975 Toyota Land Cruiser 50

Thanks to Toyota Australia I can give you much more detail on Toyota sales since the brand landed in the country in the early sixties. A total of 5,542,804 Toyotas have been sold in the country to date, with nearly 1.2 million being Corollas. Other popular nameplates in Oz are the Camry (almost 800,000), Hilux (just under 740,000) and Land Cruiser (620,000) with 6 additional nameplates above 100,000 sales.

Thailand Pick-ups June 2012: Mazda BT-50 & Ford Ranger up

Mazda BT-50

* See the Top 8 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Austin *

Thanks to Austin Rutherford I have now made Thai Pick-up sales a monthly fixture on BSCB. It is a great indication of the future success of these vehicles worldwide, straight from the country where they are all produced and available first. And no less than 50,285 new pick-ups were sold in Thailand in June, bringing the year-to-date total to 274,333. As usual the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max lead the way by far: the Hilux is at 20,028 sales for a 39.8% segment share while the D-Max sells 15,327 units at 30.5%, both share very close to their 2012 year-to-date levels. The Mitsubishi Triton rounds up the podium at 9.8%.

It seems like the amazing progression of the Chevrolet Colorado linked to the arrival of the all-new models is pausing, with the model still delivering a very strong 3,449 sales for a 6.9% market share, slightly above its 2012 level of 6.7%. It is below that we find the two performers of the month: the Mazda BT-50 is up to 3,125 sales and 6.2% vs. 4.6% in May and 4% year-to-date while its cousin the Ford Ranger is up to 2,354 units and 4.7% vs. 3.1% in May and 3% year-to-date.
