The car market in Malaysia is down 7% year-on-year in April at 45,771 registrations, bringing the 2012 year-to-date total to 178,993 units, down 12% on 2011. Traditionally very stable, the Malaysian models ranking is no different this month with the Top 4 identical to last month and the 2012 year-to-date ranking: the Perodua Myvi leads at 14.5%, followed by the Proton Saga at 11.2%, the Perodua Viva at 10.1% and the Perodua Alza at 6.5%.

The Toyota Hilux new generation is up two spots to a brilliant 5th place with 2,683 sales and 5.9% while the big event this month is the arrival of the all-new Proton Prevé at #16 with 494 units and 1.1% share. Other great performers in April include the Honda Accord at #17, the Honda CR-V at #21, the Toyota Prius c up 20 spots to #22 and the Hyundai Elantra up to #26.

* See the Top 20 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Tuga *

The Portuguese car market is not improving with sales down 42% year-on-year in April at 8,400, bringing the year-to-date total to 31,932 units, down 47%. For the first time since 1985, the market may not even pass the 100,000 units milestone this year. This month the Renault Megane is back in the pole position it last held in January and over the Full Year 2011 with 530 sales and 6.3% of the market, a much higher share than the 4.3% it commends year-to-date in 2012. The Renault Clio is down to #2 at 4.8% but stays leader year-to-date at 5%.

The Fiat Punto Evo is up 2 spots to #3 at 343 units and 4.1% and is now also #3 year-to-date with 1,097 sales and 3.4%, up from #10 in 2011. The big event this month is the arrival directly in 4th place of the all-new Peugeot 208, whereas it ‘only’ ranked #9 this month in its native France… Will 322 sales and 3.8% share its brings its year-to-date total to 344, already #22. Another shining star this month is the BMW 1 Series, up 3 further spots from an already impressive month of March to #6 with 273 units and 3.3%.

Historical Data available for 67 countries: see if you can help!

Was the Cadillac Fleetwood the best-selling car in the US in 1958? You tell me!

* See All Historical Data for 67 countries by clicking on the title! *

With so many new readers coming on the site every day I thought a quick heads-up about Historical Data would be useful. 66 countries are now available on the site! Highlights are Germany for each year since 1946France for each year since 1949the UK for each year since 1965Brazil since 1954 and Norway since 1956. Given all my posts are ordered chronologically, the older the data, the further down the list it appears. I am working on an easier way to get to Historical Data here but for now the simplest way for you to check it out is either to:

– Click on the title of this post, scroll down below the fold and click on the country link to access all Historical Data for that country.

– Click on the country you want on the right hand side of the page, scroll down, click on ‘older entries’ and enjoy!

– Scroll down until you find dates on the right hand side of the page, click on the year you want and enjoy!

I am still updating the site as I receive more Historical Data and the next batch will cover France thanks to the amazing work of STAC!

The Lada 2101-3 was #1 car in USSR in the seventies, but how much did it sell? You tell me!

In the meantime, there are still a lot of patchy Historical Data areas and this is where you come in! Have a look below the jump at all missing periods and see whether you can help by sharing data you have that is not yet on the site… The most blatant needs are for the USA between 1928 and 1973 and 1987-1991, France for 1950-1957 and 1971-1978, Australia before 1996, Russia+China+India before 2002 and Japan before 1998…

If you can help, just comment on here and I will contact you via email.

Many of you have helped in this long-term process by sharing your own data so I want to thank you all very much for it!  In particular I would like to thank Florian for German data since 1946, UK data since 1965 and the Interautonews tip, Bruno for Argentina data since 1965, Adam+DC for 70s/80s US data, myk for Philippines data since 1995, STAC for France data since 1949, Marcelo for the tip to Brazil data since 1962, Ryan P for UK data since 1974, Andrea+Cristiana for Italy data since 1956, Bill for Greece info since 1970 and Vavon+Andrea for the tip to Netherlands data since 1982. Please forgive me if I have forgotten you.

Thailand Pick-ups April 2012: Chevy Colorado & Mitsu Triton up

Chevrolet Colorado

* See the Top 8 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

We are now following the evolution of pick-up sales in Thailand monthly as it is a very good indication of the future success of these models worldwide, straight from the source where they are all produced and available first. The Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max have been dominating the ranking by far for years, and with new versions of each pick-up available since late last year you’d expect them to increase their market share further.

Mitsubishi Triton

You might say when they already hold over 70% of the pick-up market there is not much room for improvement and you would be right. This month the Hilux holds a 34.6% share and the D-Max is at 31.4%, a slight decrease that is the result of some very dynamic smaller players: the Mitsubishi Triton improves to 12% thanks to 4,468 sales, the Chevrolet Colorado continues to go up, reaching an amazing 9.3% share in April vs. 6.2% last month and the Mazda BT-50 is up one full percentage point to 5.3% at 1,959 units.

World April 2012 Round-up: Maruti Swift & Mazda CX-5 impress

Suzuki Swift

This is our second monthly World round up after March 2012, and if last month the focus was on the Toyota Prius family and its huge success in the US and Japan, April takes us to India where we witness a historical change… Don’t get me wrong, the Prius is still one of the month’s superstars, with the Prius family reaching a record 5th position in the US and the Toyota Aqua (aka Prius c) now threatening the Prius for the #1 spot overall in Japan. But I’ve talked a lot about the Prius in the last month so let’s mix it up a bit!

Toyota Prius c

Back to India. In April the Maruti/Suzuki Swift takes the lead of the models ranking with 19,484 sales and a record 8.9% market share, breaking 93 months of uninterrupted reign by the Maruti Alto. Add the sales of the sedan version, called DZire in India, and the Swift family delivers almost 35,000 sales this month for a mammoth 16% share! But this is not the big news. The Indian market is generally so stable that before now only 3 models had managed to rank #1 there since 1950: the Hindustan Ambassador, Maruti 800 and Maruti Alto. Make this 4.

Mazda CX-5

The other model starting to make some noise worldwide is the Mazda CX-5, particularly Down Under: the new small SUV reaches its highest ranking worldwide so far in New Zealand for its first month of sales there at a fantastic 6th place (in a very small market, granted) and is already knocking at the Australian Top 10’s door at #11 there with 1.8% of the market.

Hyundai i30

The third star of the month is Korean. Hyundai has not waited for sales of the i30 to slow down to replace it, and the new generation of the model, built in Nosovice in Czech Republic, already looks like it is establishing itself as the next best thing to a Skoda in Eastern Europe. No mean feat given Skoda’s domination in the region. This month it ranks #3 in Slovakia and Czech Republic and is leader in Croatia.

Chevrolet Cruze

After a fantastic First Quarter that saw it become General Motors’ best-seller worldwide for the very first time, the Chevrolet Cruze continues to progress in April, and one of its big achievements is breaking into the Russian Top 10 for the first time. The new generation BMW 3 Series is a success: it is up to a shiny 9th place overall in Europe with 17,171 sales, its first time in the Top 10 since December 2008, due in big part to a fantastic 2nd place in Germany.

BMW 3 Series

The fall in Southern Europe intensifies, with Greece down 57%, Spain down 22% and at its worst level in 25 years, and Italy down 18%. In Italy, the most affected provinces are Florence (-66%) and Rome (-61%) and UNRAE now predicts 2012 at 1,434,000 registrationsthe worst figure in 35 years. For the first time since the car started mass production in 1946, with more cars being disposed of than ones being bought, 2012 may be remembered as the year the process of “demotorisation” started in Italy!

Fiat 500 Abarth (US version)

In this sombre context, the Fiat Panda continues its brilliant run, enjoying its 4th consecutive month atop the models ranking in its native country, and reappearing in the European Top 10 at #8, its highest European ranking since February 2010. But the best news for Fiat come from abroad: this month the Fiat 500 ranks within the UK Top 10 for the first time in over 2 years.

Venucia D50

In China, two new low-cost brands make their appearance in the ranking after Linian (Honda) and Baojun (GM) last year, Honda launches the Ciimo Si Ming (#118) and Nissan launches the Venucia D50 (#122) this month. In Iran, we are starting to see the effects of Peugeot’s withdrawal and the big winner is Renault: the Tondar 90 -aka Dacia Logan- is up 35% to a best-ever 4th place this month while the Megane is up 48%…

Dacia Lodgy

In France the Peugeot 208 breaks into the Top 10 for the very first time at #9 and the Dacia Lodgy…lodges its first true month of sales at #67. I predict a Top 10 ranking there in the next year or so for the Lodgy: it has been the case for all recent Dacias in France: the Logan peaked at #7 in December 2007, the Sandero at #2 in March 2010 and the Duster at #5 in November 2011.

Toyota 86

Other worldwide highlights in April 2012 include the very promising start of the Toyota 86 in Japan at #17 for its first full month of sales, the Honda N-BOX taking the lead of the Japanese Kei cars ranking, the VW Tiguan at best-ever #2 in Norway and #3 in Switzerland, the Volvo V50 surprise leader in Finland and the Audi A1 and Q3 reaching their best rankings so far in Austria at #14 and #25 respectively.
Toyota Avanza and good old me in Bali, Indonesia May 2012
Finally, thanks to my trip to Bali at the end of last month I was able to share with you much more data and pictures about the Indonesian car market where the Toyota Avanza still rules by far.

Monaco 2011: Now with Top 228 All-models ranking!

Bentley Mulsanne. Picture by Vincent De Vries, all rights reserved.

* See the Top 228 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

After an initial introduction to the Monegasque car market 10 days ago and a Top 50 brands ranking last week, thanks to a secret admirer of Best Selling Cars Blog I am now able to share with you for the very first time on the web the list of the Top 228 best-selling models in Monaco!

Mini and Ferrari California. Picture by Petar Gachevski, all rights reserved.

The Monegasque models ranking is unique in the world: it is a mix of posh minis, small enough to be parked anywhere in the city-country, extravagant SUVs and classy sedans with (nearly) no Frenchies in sight – a paradox as Monaco is nested within France…

Ferrari 458 Italia. Picture by Reivax, all rights reserved.

The top of the ranking is biased by the one-off registration of 200 BMW 7 Series for the Royal Wedding in order to display Monaco license plates for the occasion, with all models returned to BMW after the festivities. This means the BMW 7 Series is #1 in Monaco in 2011 with 212 sales and 8.4% share. But the ‘real’ best-sellers are below and the race was extremely close: the Audi A3 is #2 overall with 98 units and 3.8%, followed by the Mini at 97 and the Audi A4 at 96!

Porsche Cayenne. Picture by Vikars, all rights reserved.

The Smart Fortwo is not far behind at #5 with 93 sales, ahead of 3 other posh small cars: the Fiat 500 at 63 units, the Mini Countryman at 57 and the Mercedes A-Class at 54. With an estimated  2,000 millionaires and 50 billionaires residing in the country, it is no surprise to find two Porsches in the Top 10: the Cayenne ranks 9th with 51 sales and 2% share and the Porsche 911 is #10 at 42 units and 1.7%, without a doubt the 2 models’ highest rankings worldwide.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietta & Fiat 500. Picture by Julien Rubicondo, all rights reserved.

There are a few other prestigious cars in the 2011 Monegasque Top 30, but the most impressive is clearly the Bentley Continental at an amazing 20th place thanks to 28 sales for a 1.1% market share… Notice also the Range Rover at #16, the Mercedes S-Class at #22, the Range Rover Sport at #25 and the Mercedes SLK at #30. Only one French model manages to claw its way into the Top 30: the Renault Clio at #29. Only the Peugeot 207 (#35) and Renault Twingo (#40) manage to break into the Top 40.

Aston Martin Cygnet. Picture by Piolew, all rights reserved.

Further down, the Mercedes CLS is #36, the Porsche Panamera #39, Aston Martin Vantage #42, Ferrari 458 Italia #43, BMW X6 #46, Ferrari California #47, Ferrari FF #58, Mercedes SLS #76, Ferrari 599 GTO #80, Rolls-Royce Ghost #92, Aston Martin Cygnet #121, Bentley Mulsanne #125, McLaren MP4 12C #135 and the Bugatti Veyron is #147.

Egypt April 2012: Hyundai Verna leads, Chevrolet Sonic lands #20

Chevrolet Sonic

* See the Top 132 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Ldman *

The Egyptian car market is up 32% year-on-year in April to 16,405, but the 2011 figure was by the Spring revolution. In this context April 2012 is down 15% on April 2010. The 2012 year-to-date total stands at 59,652 units, up 33% on 2011 but down 23% on 2010. The Top 2 best-selling models are unchanged vs. last month, the 2012 year-to-date and Full Year 2011 rankings: the Hyundai Verna is in pole position with 1,768 sales and 10.8% share, followed by the Chevrolet TFR Pick-up (aka Isuzu D-Max) at 1,635 units and 10%. The new generation Hyundai Elantra rounds up the podium, up 2 spots on March with 1,147 sales and 7% share, its highest in the country since December 2011.

Peugeot 508

Other great performers this month include the Suzuki Maruti M800 up 15 ranks on last month to #11, the new generation Kia Rio up 12 to #16 and the Renault Fluence up 21 to #18. One model manages to land directly within the Egyptian Top 20 for its very first month of sales in the country and it’s the Chevrolet Sonic with 124 sales for a solid 0.8% market share. Further down, notice the Chevrolet Cruze up 8 spots to #23, the new gen Kia Picanto up 12 to #26, the Chevrolet Spark up 46 to #29 and the Peugeot 508 reappearing in the ranking at a best-ever 30th place.

Maple Aspire

There are no less than 22 Chinese models in the Egyptian ranking this month, with the Speranza Tiggo leading the pack at #15 with 244 sales and 1.5%. But I decided to put the spotlight on a little-known Chinese brand: Maple, also known as Shanghai Maple Guorun Automobile or SMA. As it happens, this brand actually doesn’t exist anymore, having been fully consolidated into Geely in 2008 and then replaced by Englon. But a few very last models are being sold in various countries, including Ukraine and Egypt: the Maple Aspire is #86 with 7 units sold…

Maple Escala

…the Maple Escala is #129 with just one unit sold…

Maple Romeo

…whereas the Maple Romeo follows at #130, also with one lonely sale.
