Ok I will bend BSCB’s rules a little here, normally I only talk about the best-selling models but in the case of Ukraine the most recent models information I have dates back to 2010 and there is brand data available for December 2011 so I thought I would share it with you.

In December 24,841 new cars were registered in Ukraine, a 20% gain over November. Lada dominates the brands ranking with 2,506 sales and 10.1% share (vs. 17.2% in Russia) however its supremacy is threatened by Toyota this month, up 32% to 2,240 units and 9%. Hyundai rounds up the podium at 8.5%, followed by ZAZ (7.6%), VW (6.5%), Renault (6.3%) and Skoda (6.1%).

But the main event this month is the arrival for the very first time of Geely in the Top 10 best-selling brands in the country. The Chinese manufacturer sells 1,131 units in December for a 4.6% market share, 99% above November and 154% above December 2010. This is probably due to the arrival of the Geely Emgrand EC7, the first Chinese car to get a 4 star rating at the Euro NCAP crash-test and already leader in its category with 34.2% share and double the sales of the #2.

The second Chinese brand in the Top 20 in Chery at #15 with 506 sales, up 25%. Let’s compare this with neighbour Russia: in December the best-selling Chinese brand in Russia is Lifan at #25 with 0.7% share, followed by Geely at #31 (0.5%) and Chery at #34 (0.4%).
