Indian consumers are fond of novelty: all 4 new models that made their first appearance last month are progressing in the ranking in October. But first let’s focus on the top of the ranking. The Maruti Alto is of course the best-seller again but with only 15,197 sales it is down 53% year-on-year and delivers its weakest month in at least 3 years! Is it the Hyundai Eon-effect?
The Hyundai i10 follows at 11,557 sales (-23%) and the Tata Indica/Vista jumps on the podium for the first time since 2009 with 10,912 units (+11%). The Mahindra Scorpio is up to #4 like in July with 8,082 sales. The Maruti Wagon R is down to #5 and 7,934 units (-53%), its first time outside the podium in 17 months. It stays #2 year-to-date however with 123,159 sales. Maruti is having a difficult month with the Swift at #6 (-39%) and the DZire at #14 (-48%).
Hyundai in contrast is very strong: the Hyundai i20 is up 3 spots on September to reach a best-ever 7th place with 6,834 sales and the all-new Hyundai Eon progresses to #8 with 6,315 sales. A very promising start… The Toyota Etios is back in the Top 10 at #10 and 5,859 units, its third highest monthly volume, while the Chevrolet Beat reaches its highest position and volume ever in India at #13 and 5,315 sales.
The other newcomers are improving significantly: the Nissan Sunny is up 8 spots and 103% on last month to #34 and 1,340 sales, the India-exclusive Honda Brio up 23 spots and 613% to #36 and 1,220 units and the Mahindra XUV500 up 10 spots and 140% to #37 and 1,213 sales.
