Turkey 2000: Renault Clio and Opel Astra take command in record market

The Symbol sedan accounts for the majority of Clio sales in Turkey

618,704 new cars hit Turkish roads in 2000, a stunning 63.7% year-on-year bounce and believed to be a new record. Renault (+57.1%) and Ford (+62.6%) evolve roughly like the market and stay on top of the brands charts, but Opel (+156.3%) and VW (+80.4%) are catching up. Fiat (+56.1%) is down two spots on last year to #5 and Hyundai (+56.3%) is down one to #6. Lada (+107.7%) and Peugeot (+84.4%) shine below.

Over in the models charts, the Renault Clio (+413.4%) surges ahead from #14 in 1999 to take the lead with just under 45,000 units, note this includes the Clio Symbol sedan variant. The Opel Astra (+213.8%) is up five spots to #2 while the Ford Transit (+34.8%), leader for the past two years, is down to #3. The Renault Megane (+126%) is down one rank to #4 while the Ford Focus (+160.2%) rounds out the Top 5. The Renault Kangoo (+296.5%), VW T4 (+100.4%) and Fiat Palio (+80.4%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10.
