Tata (+54%) also advances faster than the market to consolidate its 2nd place at a record 15.7% share, while Mahindra (+28%) drops to 12.9% but comfortably remains in third place. Premier (+21%) is back above archenemy Hindustan (+11%) at #4 while Daewoo is up 129% to 1% share and we welcome Mercedes at #9 with just under 1.000 sales and 0.2% share.

The Tata Sumo lands directly at #9 for its first appearance in the Indian sales charts.

Model-wise, the Maruti 800 (+24%) is by far the most popular even though its share thaws to 27.4%, distancing the Mahindra Jeep (+33%) at 11.6%, the Tata 407/608/609 (+33%) up one spot to #3 and the Maruti Esteem directly up to #4 for its first full year of sales. The Maruti Omnivan (-3%) is knocked down two ranks to #5 ahead of the Hindustan Ambassador (+9%), Maruti Zen (+386%) and Premier Padmini (+26%). The Tata Sumo lands directly inside the Top 10 at #9, relegating the Tata Estate/Sierra (-26%) to #13.
