In 1992 the second generation Ford Taurus was launched but by mid-year the Honda Accord was still leading the passenger car rankings with 191,682 sales. Thanks to heavy promotions the Taurus managed to finish the year as the best-selling passenger car in the USA with 409,751 sales vs. 393,477 for the Accord. It is the first time since 1988 an American brand places a car atop the passenger car ranking, and the first time the Taurus does so.
The Ford F-Series stays in the lead of the overall ranking at 472,475 units ahead of the Chevrolet C/K with 428,514 sales. The Ford Explorer takes the 5th spot overall at 306,681 units, ahead of the Toyota Camry, Dodge Caravan and Ford Ranger.
