New car sales in Spain continue to gallop ahead with a 33.1% year-on-year surge in 1987 to a record 887.777 registrations. Renault (+15.3%) remains the most popular brand but keeps diving market share-wise at 22.3% vs. 25.8% a year ago. Ford (+43.1%), Opel (+30.3%), Seat (+27.8%) and Peugeot (+50.7%) ensure the Top 5 is unchanged on 1986. Fiat (+133.4%), Audi (+104.1%), Lancia (+98.9%) and Alfa Romeo (+90.5%) all post spectacular gains.

Model-wise, the top of the ranking is completely reshuffled and it’s a photo finish with the Top 5 models all fitting within one percentage point of market share. 3 years after its launch in 1984, the Seat Ibiza (+94.2%) almost doubles its sales year-on-year and leaps up 5 spots to grab the #1 spot for the first time in Spain. It distances the Opel Kadett (+80.7%), Renault 21 (+163.4%) up to #3 for its first full year in market, the Renault 11 (-19.1%) #1 for the past 3 years, the Peugeot 205 (+5.8%) and Renault Supercinq (+22.7%). The Ford Orion (+56.9%) and Fiesta (+56.1%) make themselves noticed in the tail end of the Top 10, the Peugeot 309 (+909.7%) is up to #11 for its first full year of sales, the Citroen AX lands directly at #14 and the Seat Marbella at #15.
