India Full Year 1987: Maruti 800, Premier Padmini dominate market up 32.5%

The Maruti 800 is the best-seller in India for the third straight year.

New vehicle sales in India surge 32.5% year-on-year in 1987 to cross the 200.000 annual unit-mark at 212.243. Maruti (+46%) once again outpaces the market to improve its share to 44.6% share, now almost 3 times any of the other brands present in India, with the most popular being Premier (+26%) at 15.6% back above Mahindra (+11%) at 15.3% while Hindustan (+12%) remains 4th at 12.4% and Force Motors (+20%) rounds up the Top 5 at 5.6%. The Maruti 800 soars 49% to improve its share by more than three points to 29.6%, with the Premier Padmini (+18%) trailing the market and down to 13.6% but holding onto the #2 spot for just 600 sales above the Maruti Omnivan (+56%) up one spot to #3. The Mahindra Jeep (+46%) is also up one rank to #4, both overtaking the Hindustan Ambassador (+9%).
