Thanks to SMMT I can now share with you the Top 10 best-sellers for each UK nation for July, and looking at detailed sales data by nation it becomes apparent that the UK as a whole really just owes its 41st consecutive month of year-on-year gains to a strong performance in England which accounts for 86.6% of overall sales vs. 85.6% year-to-date: up 4.4% to 153.923 registrations, England balances out a lukewarm showing in Northern Ireland (+1.6%) and negative results in both Wales (-2.5%) and Scotland (-5.8%). Like in April and June, the Ford Fiesta tops each nation this month, lodging its strongest market share in Wales (9.6%) and its weakest in Northern Ireland (3.6%).

Ford Kuga UK July 2015The Ford Kuga is #3 in Wales and #6 in Northern Ireland.

Second nationally, the Ford Focus is logically the only nameplate to rack up two #2 spots: in England and Wales, ranking 4th in Northern Ireland and Scotland. The Vauxhall Corsa only manages a #2 spot in Scotland while the VW Golf is #2 in Northern Ireland but also #3 in England. Three additional nameplates manage a podium ranking in July: the VW Polo (#3 in Scotland), Ford Kuga (#3 in Wales but also #6 in Northern Ireland) and Renault Clio (#3 in Northern Ireland). Other notable performances include the Audi A3 #5 in England, the Fiat 500 #5 in Scotland and the Vauxhall Insignia #7 and Renault Captur #9 in Northern Ireland. The Vauxhall Mokka, although not in the national July Top 10, is #6 in Wales and #9 in Scotland.

Thanks to SMMT I can now share with you the Top 10 best-sellers for each UK nation for June. Logically, England follows the overall UK market’s 13% year-on-year gain this month, while Scotland is just below at +12%, Wales at +7% and Northern Ireland at +5% – still in negative year-to-date (-0.6%). Very consistent models rankings in June in all nations: the UK podium 1. Fiesta 2. Corsa 3. Focus is replicated in each and every nation, a very rare feat. The VW Golf is #4 in England and Northern Ireland but the Vauxhall Mokka brilliantly takes this spot in Scotland for the 2nd month running, managing to rank inside the Top 10 of each nation this month: #10 in England and Northern Ireland and #6 in Wales.

The Ford Kuga for its part rises up to #4 in Wales, earning the same #4 spot year-to-date there and is back inside the Northern Irish Top 10 at #8. Thanks to a cool 7th place in Wales, the Dacia Sandero now features in the year-to-date Top 10 of two nations: Scotland and Wales. We welcome back the Peugeot 208 at #7 in Northern Ireland and #10 in Scotland, while the Renault Captur is up to #8 in Scotland and the Hyundai ix35 stays #9 in Northern Ireland.

Thanks to SMMT we have access to the Top 10 best-sellers for each UK nation for May, as a teaser for overall UK results due very shortly. Overall, if UK new car sales are up 2% in May, it’s actually England (+4%) thats is keeping everyone above water level, as Northern Ireland (-3%), Wales (-5%) and above all Scotland (-8%) are in clear negative territory, a sign that the record uninterrupted run of 39 months of year-on-year UK gains may be coming to an end soon. The Ford Fiesta topped all nations in April but only two this month: England (4.6%) and Wales (9.5%) while the VW Golf is #1 in Northern Ireland (3.9%) and the Vauxhall Corsa reclaims the Scottish lead (5.3%). The Ford Focus is the only other nameplate to manage a podium ranking at #2 in England and Wales and the Vauxhall Mokka posts a brilliant 4th spot in Scotland and Wales.

Hyundai i10 UK May 2015. Picture courtesy of honestjohn.co.ukThe Hyundai i10 is #8 in Northern Ireland in May.

Among irregular Top tenners, let’s single out the Seat Ibiza knocking two birds with one stone in May: up to a splendid 6th place in Scotland with 2.6% share and 7th in Wales at 2.1% of the market. The Dacia Sandero is fast establishing itself as a blockbuster in the UK: it earns its first year-to-date Top 10 ranking in Scotland (#10) where its dislodges the Audi A3 thanks to May at #7 and 2.2%. The Hyundai i10 spends a 2nd consecutive month among the Top 10 best-sellers in Northern Ireland at #8 and the Mini doesn’t just owe its #6 overall UK spot to a strong performance in England (#6): it also reappears at #10 both in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Vauxhall Corsa manages to rank #2 in two nations (Scotland and Wales), with the Nissan Qashqai (Northern Ireland) and Ford Focus (England) filling up the other #2 spots. UK nations March 2015: Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa ultra-dominant

April 11th, 2015 No comments

Vauxhall Corsa UK March 2015The Vauxhall Corsa is the best-seller in Scotland in March.

* See the Top 10 best-selling models for each nation by clicking on the title *

Thanks to data communicated by SMMT I can share with you the Top 10 best-selling models for each UK nation for March. With an overall market up 6% to the best monthly score this century, sales in each UL nation are bound to be extremely strong. In fact England (+7% to 419.826 units) pulls the rest of the country up, with Scotland (44.826) and Wales (19.238) both up just 3% on March 2014 and Northern Ireland even lodging a negative performance at -2% to 7.415 units. Very rare feat: the same 3 nameplates monopolise the podium of each UK nation this month: the Ford Fiesta tops 3 nations, only outsold in Scotland by the Vauxhall Corsa, itself #2 in all other nations while the Ford Focus ranks third everywhere…

Vauxhall Mokka UK March 2015. Picture courtesy of whatcar.co.ukThe Vauxhall Mokka is inside the Top 10 of each UK nation bar England.

In England – accounting for 85% of the country’s sales this month, the Mercedes C-Class outperforms both in March when it ranks #7 with 8,076 sales vs. #8 overall, overtaking the Vauxhall Astra, and year-to-date where it now also holds the #7 spot vs. #9 in the overall UK ranking, dominating both the Audi A3 and VW Polo. The remaining UK nations, much smaller markets, are the opportunity for other nameplates to find a spot in the Top 10: a few nameplates absent from the overall UK Top 10 place well within it: the Vauxhall Mokka does so in all remaining UK nations (#5 in Scotland, #7 in Northern Ireland and #9 in Wales), the Renault Clio (#4 in Scotland and #6 in Northern Ireland), Ford Kuga (#6 in Wales and #9 in Northern Ireland) and Peugeot 208 (#8 in Wales and #9 in Scotland) do it twice while the Toyota Yaris (#7 in Wales) and Renault Captur (#10 in Northern Ireland) also make an appearance.

As a teaser to overall UK sales and thanks to data communicated by SMMT, I give you the Top 10 best-selling models for each UK nation for February. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into 4 separate nations that compose the UK market, so these figures are not in addition to the UK. This month Scotland (+15%) is the best performing nation, followed by Wales (+14%) and England (+12%) while Northern Ireland (+2%) struggles once again but at least is back into positive territory. Even though it is #1 nationally, the Ford Fiesta only tops 2 out of 4 nations in February: the VW Golf justifies its 2nd spot overall in the UK by a strong English score and the pole position in Northern Ireland, while the Vauxhall Corsa dominates Scottish sales for the 4th month in a row, and by far at 7.3% share vs. 4.9% for the Fiesta. One nation where the Fiesta is unreachable is Wales: 11.4% share this month…

Mini UK February 2015. Picture courtesy autocar.co.ukThe Mini is up to #4 in Scotland.

In the lower rankings, notice the Vauxhall Insignia up to #6 in England vs. #7 nationally and #5 inScotland, the BMW 1 Series benefiting from discounted rates before the facelifted model hits dealerships and ranking #10 in England and #5 in Scotland and the Mini at #4 in Scotland. The Mercedes C-Class, very strong in England at #8, also makes its first Top 10 appearance in Scotland in at least 2 years at #10, while the Hyundai ix35 (Northern Ireland), Vauxhall Mokka, Toyota Yaris, Peugeot 208 and Suzuki Alto (Wales) also point their bonnet in the Top 10 of one UK nation this month.

Thanks to SMMT, now that we have explored the UK market as a whole for January, as is the tradition on BSCB we zoom in on the British nations and this month England (+8%) lifs the entire country with Wales (+2%), Scotland (-1%) and Northern Ireland (-5%) all under performing vs. the national average of +7%. #1 nationally, the Ford Fiesta tops 3 out of 4 nations in January: England, Northern Ireland and Wales, missing the top spot by 71 units in Scotland where it is outsold by the Vauxhall Corsa.

Toyota Aygo UK January 2015The Toyota Aygo is #7 in Wales

The Nissan Qashqai does even better in England than nationally, up to #3 there, as does the Mercedes C-Class up to #6. Lots of movement in Northern Ireland where the Seat Ibiza is up to #7, the Hyundai ix35 up to #8 and the Hyundai i20 cracks its first Top 10 for the new generation at #10. Excellent performance of the Fiat 500 in Scotland: it lands on the podium at #3 while the Audi A3 is up to an unusually high 5th place and the Dacia Sandero is back in the Scottish Top 10 at #6. Notice also the Toyota Aygo up to #7 in Wales.

The Vauxhall Mokka demonstrates remarkable consistency by ranking inside the Top 10 in 3 nations: Northern Ireland (#6), Scotland (#10) and Wales (#6). The success of the Ford Kuga is spreading: #4 in Wales and now lodging its first Top 10 in Northern Ireland at #9.

According to SMMT, the Welsh new car market was in line with the UK overall with a 9% increase on 2013 to 90,982 registrations. The Ford Fiesta is the best-seller once again with an improved 9.1% share thanks to sales up 12%, ahead of the Ford Focus (-13%), Vauxhall Corsa (+7%) and Astra (-20%) like in 2013. The big novelty in the Top 10 is the Ford Kuga leaping up directly to 5th place with 1,862 units sold for an excellent 2.1% market share, making Wales the Ford SUV’s best-performing UK nation by far in 2014. The Fiat 500 (#8) and Vauxhall Mokka (#10) also make their first appearance inside the Welsh Top 10.

Thanks to SMMT, alongside the UK market as a whole for November, as is the tradition on BSCB we zoom in on the British nations, with England (+8%) and Scotland (+7%) outperforming Wales and Northern Ireland (+6% each) in globally very uniform performances across the country. Like last month, the Ford Fiesta only manages to top two nations (England and Wales) with the VW Golf #1 for the 2nd straight month in Northern Ireland and the Vauxhall Corsa reclaiming the lead in Scotland.

The hero of the month is the Renault Captur: it outsells the Clio in at least two of 4 nations, reaching its first ever podium in any UK nation in Northern Ireland where it ranks #3 below only the VW Golf and Ford Focus, and breaking into the Welsh Top 10 for the first time at #8 with 2% share. The Fiat 500 comes close with a fantastic 2nd place in Scotland, while the Peugeot 108 celebrates its very first Top 10 ranking in any UK nation at #10 in Scotland. Other great performers this month include the Mercedes C-Class #9 in England and the Ford Kuga #5 in Wales.
