Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you the best-sellers for each nation in the UK in January, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall January update. With the UK market gaining ground year-on-year for the 23rd consecutive time this month, we have Wales (+22%), Northern Ireland (+20%) and Scotland (+9%) over performing, while England (+7%) is slightly below the national average. I give you the rankings for now, complete analysis will follow shortly.
In Scotland, the Ford Fiesta starts the year with a bang at 5.5% share, two percentage points above all other models including the VW Polo, #2 for the 2nd month running with 438 sales and 3.5%. The Renault Clio is up 6 spots on December to land at an excellent 4th position with 377 units sold for a 3% market share, the Fiat 500 is up two to #8 which is also its FY2013 ranking, and the Ford Ka points its bonnet in c0-8th place thanks to 261 sales and 2.1% share, the first time the Ka appears in any nation’s Top 10 since we started following these UK nations in detail mid-last year.
In Northern Ireland, the Ford Fiesta is only #1 thanks to 2 additional units sold over the Seat Ibiza this month, an incredible performance from the Spanish supermini, up from outside the Top 10 both in December and over the FY2013 directly to #2 with 282 sales and 4.2% share… The VW Polo also shines, back inside the Top 10 at #3 with 227 units and 3.4% vs. #7 and 2.3% over the FY2013 as does the Vauxhall Corsa at #4 and 2.8%. Finally, notice the Hyundai ix35 breaking into the Top 10 for the first time since last October at #10 with 113 sales and 1.7%.
In Wales, the Ford Fiesta lodges another bumper month at 9.7% share thanks to 530 sales, almost 3 times the score of the #2, the Ford Focus at 197 units and 3.6%. Here too the Seat Ibiza is the hero of the month, jumping from outside the Top 10 in December and over the FY2013 up to 4th position with 148 sales and 2.7% share. The Ford Kuga also impresses, up to #7 at 121 units and 2.2%, as does the Toyota Yaris up to #10 with 99 sales and 1.8%.
In England, for once the models Top 10 is noticeably different to the UK one even though England accounts for 84% of the overall UK market in January. Below the Ford Fiesta and Focus, the VW Golf is up to #3 with 3,849 sales and 3% share, passing the Vauxhall Corsa down to #4, the Audi A3 is up to a splendid 6th place here vs. #7 in the UK, overtaking the Vauxhall Astra to become #3 in its category below just the Focus and Golf, and finally the Nissan Juke is above its production line buddy the Nissan Qashqai for the very first time at #8 and 2,421 sales vs. #9 and 2,409.
