Thanks to SMMT, alongside the UK market as a whole for November, as is the tradition on BSCB we zoom in on the British nations, with England (+8%) and Scotland (+7%) outperforming Wales and Northern Ireland (+6% each) in globally very uniform performances across the country. Like last month, the Ford Fiesta only manages to top two nations (England and Wales) with the VW Golf #1 for the 2nd straight month in Northern Ireland and the Vauxhall Corsa reclaiming the lead in Scotland.

The hero of the month is the Renault Captur: it outsells the Clio in at least two of 4 nations, reaching its first ever podium in any UK nation in Northern Ireland where it ranks #3 below only the VW Golf and Ford Focus, and breaking into the Welsh Top 10 for the first time at #8 with 2% share. The Fiat 500 comes close with a fantastic 2nd place in Scotland, while the Peugeot 108 celebrates its very first Top 10 ranking in any UK nation at #10 in Scotland. Other great performers this month include the Mercedes C-Class #9 in England and the Ford Kuga #5 in Wales.

Thanks to SMMT, after studying the UK market as a whole for October, as is the tradition on BSCB we zoom in on the British nations, with England (+15%) and Wales (+13%) leading the way this month as Scotland (+8%) and Northern Ireland (+7%) are more discreet but still very dynamic. If the Ford Fiesta topped all nations last month, in October it is only #1 in England and Wales. The Ford Focus astounds in Scotland by securing a huge 8.6% of the market vs. #3 and 3.5% YTD, as it had never ranked #1 in the 18 months we’ve been following the Scottish market, this sounds like a special order by some government body. If you live in Scotland and can confirm this please get in touch. The VW Golf for its part tops the sales charts in Northern Ireland for the third time in the past 7 months thanks to 164 sales and 4.3% but remains #2 YTD behind the Ford Fiesta.

Volvo V40 UK October 2014The Volvo V40 breaks into the Northern Irish Top 10 this month.

If the UK saw exceptional performances by the Nissan Juke (#5) and Mini (#9), these results are not just the work of the English market where they respectively rank #5 and #8, the trend can also be observed in other UK nations. The Nissan Juke is back in the Top 10 in Northern Ireland (#9) and Wales (#7) where it also outsells the Qashqai, while the Mini returns inside the Top 10 best-sellers in Scotland (#10) and Wales (#10). The Volvo V40 brilliantly breaks into the Northern Irish Top 10 at #10 with 1.8%, this is the first ever time this nameplate ranks inside the Top 10 of any UK nation. Other notable performances are posted by the Ford Kuga #4 in Wales, Vauxhall Mokka #8 in Northern Ireland and the Vauxhall Insignia #9 in Scotland.

Thanks to SMMT, after studying the UK market as a whole for September, as is the tradition on BSCB we zoom in on the British nations, now that it has been confirmed they will stay this way. A very consistent performance across the country with the UK overall up 9% year-on-year in September, the same rate as England and Northern Ireland, while Scotland up 7% and Wales up 8%. The Peugeot 208 made a comeback in the UK Top 10 this month at #9 and it impeccably replicates this performance across absolutely all nations: #5 in Northern Ireland, #8 in Wales, #9 in Scotland and #10 in England.

The Fiat 500’s record-breaking 6th position in the UK is achieved thanks to, logically, a 6th place in England but also a 4th place in Scotland and 5th place in Wales. In Scotland, thanks to sales just 100-odd units below the Vauxhall Corsa this month, the Ford Fiesta’s Full Year top spot is now almost assured, which would put an end to 6 consecutive years of Corsa domination. Other notable performances include the second place of the VW Polo in Northern Ireland, the Renault Clio #5 in Scotland, the VW Golf now #3 year-to-date in England above the Vauxhall Corsa and both the Vauxhall Mokka and Renault Captur securing a Top 10 ranking in one nation each, Scotland and Northern Ireland respectively.

Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you once again the detailed models ranking for each nation in the UK. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the overall UK August update. Compared to the UK average of 9% gain year-on-year this month, England over performs at +11%, Wales and Scotland are in line at +9% and +8% respectively, while Northern Ireland shockingly drops by 3% year-on-year. The first sign of a slowing down of new car sales in the UK? This month the main event is the Vauxhall Mokka appearing in the Top 10 of 3 out of 4 nations. But there is much more going on, so check out each nation’s update and ranking below.

Seat Ibiza UK August 2014The Seat Ibiza ranks #10 in Scotland this month.

In Scotland, the Ford Fiesta delivers a bumper month at 7.3% share thanks to 472 sales, almost double the amount of the #2 model the Ford Focus at 250 units and 3.9%. The Fiesta thus increases its advantage over the 2013 leader the Vauxhall Corsa to 939 units and 7,275 vs. 6.336. The Vauxhall Astra (+1 on July), VW Polo (+3) improve while the Vauxhall Mokka is back inside the Top 10 at #7 with 2.3% share, the Dacia Sandero does the same at #8 and 2% share and the Seat Ibiza makes its first appearance of the year among the nation’s 10 most popular vehicles at #10 with 1.7% share.

Hyundai ix35 UK August 2014The Hyundai ix35 is now among the year-to-date Top 10 best-sellers in Northern Ireland.

In Northern Ireland, the VW Golf takes the lead for the third time in the past 5 months, up two spots on July to 148 sales and 3.9% share but still #2 year-to-date below the Ford Fiesta at 1,360 sales and 3.3% vs. 1,661 and 4%. #1 last month, the Nissan Qashqai falls to #9 in August, below the Vauxhall Mokka making its very first appearance in the Northern Irish monthly Top 10 at #8 with 77 sales and 2% share. Notice also the VW Polo up 5 ranks on July to #3, the Hyundai ix35 ip a further two spots to #7 and breaking into the year-to-date Top 10 at #9 and the Renault Captur reappearing among the nation’s 10 best-sellers at #10 and cementing its #8 spot so far in 2014.

Citroen C4 Picasso UK August 2014. Picture courtesy of whatcar.co.ukThe Citroen C4 Picasso is #6 in Wales in August.

In Wales, the Ford Fiesta is stronger than ever in pole position, grabbing 11.3% of the market thanks to 274 sales, its highest share in the nation so far in 2014. The Ford Focus and Vauxhall Corsa complete the podium, the Ford Kuga holds onto the #5 spot and overtakes the Nissan Qashqai to rank #6 year-to-date, the Citroen C4 Picasso jumps to a fantastic 6th place with 2.1% share – only its 2nd time inside the Welsh Top 10 since BSCB started following Wales monthly. Same thing for the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer at #10 after ranking #8 last February, while the Vauxhall Mokka is among the 10 best-seller for the 2nd time in the past 4 months at #9 and 1.9% share.

Vauxhall Insignia UK August 2014. Picture courtesy of whatcar.co.ukVauxhall Insignia

In England, for once the ranking differs relatively significantly from the overall UK one even though this nation represents 82% of overall UK sales in August. The VW Golf jumps on the podium like last month thanks to 2,021 sales and 3.8% share, the Audi A3 is stronger at 2.5% share vs. 2.3% in the UK overall but remains 6th, the Opel Insignia is #7 vs. #9 in the UK and finally the Nissan Qashqai is #9 whereas the VW Polo goes from #7 in the UK to #10 here.

Thanks to SMMT, I can now unveil the 10 best-sellers for each nation in the UK in July, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall July update. The overall UK market is up 7% year-on-year in July, and if England is in line with the overall growth at 7%, Northern Ireland and Scotland over perform at +9% each while Wales is stable year-on-year. It’s a pretty quiet month as far as models sales charts are concerned, with not many extravagant developments and two models standing out: the Nissan Qashqai and Ford C-Max.

Vauxhall Corsa UK July 2014The Vauxhall Corsa is back to #1 in Scotland

In Scotland, the fight continues between the Vauxhall Corsa, #1 over the past 6 years but #2 year-to-date and back in pole position in July thanks to 752 sales and 5.2%, and the Ford Fiesta down to #2 this month at 705 units and 4.9% but still leader year-to-date at 6,803 sales and 5.3% vs. 6,089 and 4.7% for the Corsa. As it was the case last year, the annual top spot will be decided during the gargantuan month of September when the licence plate change triggers big volumes. The Nissan Qashqai is up two spots on last month to #4, the VW Polo is back inside the Top 10 at #8 and the Toyota Yaris is down 5 to #9 which is still better than its year-to-date ranking in Scotland.

Nissan Qashqai Northern Ireland July 2014. Picture courtesy of largus.frThe Nissan Qashqai is the best-selling model in Northern Ireland this month.

In Northern Ireland, the Nissan Qashqai brilliantly takes the lead of the sales charts for the 2nd time in the past 9 months after last October with 162 sales and 3.9%, dislodging the Ford Fiesta from its traditional pole position, a ranking it holds onto year-to-date. The Suzuki Alto reappears in the Top 5 for the first time since last February at #5 with 108 units and 2.6%, while the Hyundai ix35 maintains itself inside the Top 10 for the 2nd month running at #9 and the Ford C-Max points its bonnet in 10th place at 74 sales and 1.8%. Even though it is outside the Top 10 this month, the Renault Captur gains one spot year-to-date to rank #8, the highest of any UK nation.

In Wales, the podium is unchanged vs. last month and year-to-date (Fiesta-Focus-Corsa) and also happens to be identical to the UK as a whole. The Nissan Qashqai is up 5 spots on June to a cool 4th position with 2.4% share, just above the Ford Kuga which continues to do extremely well here: at #5 with 148 sales and 2.4% this month and #7 year-to-date. The Toyota Yaris is up one to #7 and the Ford C-Max makes its first appearance in the Top 10 since last November at #10 with 95 units and 1.5%.

VW Golf UK July 2014The VW Golf is on the English podium in July.

In England, as usual the ranking is very similar to the UK one as England represents 86% of overall UK sales this month. There are just two changes compared to the UK Top 10: the VW Golf is up one spot to round up the podium at #3 thanks to 4,566 sales and 3.1%, overtaking the Vauxhall Corsa, and the Vauxhall Insignia snatches a Top 10 spot at #10 with 2,136 units and 1.4%, kicking the Mini out.

Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, England (UK) June 2014: Is the Aygo Toyota’s new star?

July 9th, 2014 1 comment

Toyota Aygo UK June 2014The Toyota Aygo shoots up to 5th place in Wales in June.

* See the Top 10 best-selling models for each nation by clicking on the title! *

Thanks to SMMT, I can now unveil the 10 best-sellers for each nation in the UK in June, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall June update. The overall UK market is up 6% year-on-year in June, and we are back to England being the true engine of growth: up 7% along with Wales while Northern Ireland (+2%) and Scotland (+1%) deliver more conservative growth rates. Last month the Dacia Sandero simultaneously appeared in 3 nations Top 10 for the first time, and this month it appears in none, but a few other models make sparks…

Mini UK June 2014The Mini is #9 in Scotland this month.

In Scotland, the Ford Fiesta reclaims the pole position it holds year-to-date thanks to a splendid 1,074 sales and 5.6% share, knocking the Vauxhall Corsa down to #3 while the Ford Focus is back up two spots on May to #2. The Toyota Yaris jumps leaps and bounds straight to 4th place whereas we had not see it appear inside the Top 10 since BSCB started following UK nations monthly one year ago. Same goes for the Mini at #9, potentially thanks to the new generation now spreading across dealerships.

Nissan Juke UK June 2014Nissan Juke (US model shown)

In Northern Ireland too the Ford Fiesta is back to #1 with a very strong 5.5% share vs. 4.1% year-to-date, followed by the Ford Focus while the VW Golf drops to #3 after leading the market in May. The big performer this month here is the Nissan Juke shooting back into the Top 10 directly in 4th place with 2.8% share, and now #9 year-to-date. Notice also the Seat Ibiza up to #6, the Hyundai ix35 up 2 spots to #8 and the Renault Captur remaining solid at #9.

Ford Kuga UK June 2014Ford Kuga

In Wales, the models ranking is getting closer to the overall UK market with the Ford Fiesta followed by the Focus and Vauxhall Corsa but the real stars of the month are the Ford Kuga up a further 3 spots on an already excellent 7th place in May to a brilliant #4 spot with 2.2% share and the Toyota Aygo landing in the Top 10 for the first time at #5, potentially due to a combination of runout prices for the old gen and the striking new gen bursting onto the scene.

In England, traditionally the models ranking is very similar to the overall UK one given England accounts for 85.5% of the total in June. This month the difference comes towards the end of the Top 10 with BMW 3 Series and the Audi A3 overtaking the Ford 500 to position themselves in 8th and 9th places respectively and knocking the Italian charmer down to #10. On top, the Ford Fiesta makes it 4 nations out of 4 in pole position, with the Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Focus rounding out the podium.

Dacia Sandero UK May 2014The Dacia Sandero has now conquered Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Is England next?

* See the Top 10 best-selling models for each nation by clicking on the title! *

Thanks to SMMT, I can now unveil the 10 best-sellers for each nation in the UK in May, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall May update. The overall UK market is up 8% year-on-year in May, and while last month the true engine of growth was England, this time the smaller nations are pushing the overall market up: Scotland is up 16%, Wales up 12.5% and Northern Ireland up 12% while England is up a more conservative 7%. This month even though the Vauxhall Mokka makes its very first Top 10 appearance in the overall UK ranking it only appears in one Top 10 (Wales) while the Dacia Sandero simultaneously appears in 3 nations Top 10 for the first time.

Renault Clio UK May 2014The Renault Clio is on the Scottish podium this month.

In Scotland, the Vauxhall Corsa is back in pole position for the 2nd time in the past 3 months with 959 sales and 5.4%, a frank advantage over year-to-date leader the Ford Fiesta at 786 units and 4.4%. The Renault Clio is up two spots on April to brilliantly jump onto the Scottish podium for the first time since BSCB follows monthly data (last June) thanks to 603 sales and 3.4% and remains at a strong 4th place year-to-date vs. #9 in 2013. The Dacia Sandero is also up two ranks to #8 while the Audi A3 makes a remarkable appearance in the Scottish Top 10 at #9.

VW Golf UK May 2014The VW Golf is the best-seller in Northern Ireland for the 2nd month running.

In Northern Ireland, after topping the sales charts last month for the first time since BSCB has been following this market monthly (June 2013) the VW Golf doubles it and stays in pole position thanks to 180 sales and 3.8% share, well above the traditional leader the Ford Fiesta at 148 units and 3.7%. However this is not enough (yet) to dislodge the Fiesta from the year-to-date top spot with the Golf adding up to 921 sales vs. 1,059. The Dacia Sandero is up to a record 6th place with 122 units and 2.6%, only its second time in the Northern Irish Top 10 after last March (#10), the Seat Leon makes its first appearance inside the Top 10 at #8 with 104 units and 2.2% and the Renault Captur is now up to #8 year-to-date.

Seat Leon UK May 2014Excellent 8th place of the Seat Leon in Northern Ireland

In Wales, the Ford Fiesta continues its solo run at 8.6% market share and 9.5% year-to-date, almost 2.5 times the nearest competitor, big sister Ford Focus at 3.6% and 3.9% respectively. The VW Golf jumps 6 spots on April to land in third place with 2.5% share, the Renault Clio reappears inside the Top 10 for the third time in the past 6 months at #5 with 2.2%, its best ranking in at least one year. Excellent hold of the Ford Kuga in 7th place, earning it a #8 spot year-to-date, the Dacia Sandero is also back in the Top 10 at #8 while the Vauxhall Mokka breaks into it for the first time at #9.

BMW 1 Series UK May 2014The BMW 1 Series is #9 in England

In England, traditionally the ranking is very close to the overall UK one as this nation accounts for 85% of UK sales. Below the Ford Fiesta at 4.6% share, the VW Golf justifies its astounding #2 overall UK ranking with a #2 spot in England with 3.9% share vs. 3.7% in the UK. In fact the entire Top 8 is identical to the UK one, with the BMW 1 Series breaking into the English Top 10 against the odds at #9 and 2,517 sales and 1.5%, which is potentially the first time it outsells its big sister the 3 Series. The Fiat 500 closes a Mokka-less Top 10.

Thanks to SMMT, I can now unveil the 10 best-sellers for each nation in the UK in April, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall April update. The overall UK market is up 8% year-on-year in April, however England is the true engine of growth this month at +9% and 85% of total sales, with Northern Ireland (+7%), Scotland (+3%) and especially Wales – shockingly down 1% – all under-performing.

Dacia Sandero UK April 2014The Dacia Sandero is among the 10 most popular vehicles in Scotland.

In Scotland, massive event this month: after pointing its bonnet inside the Top 10 for the first time in 2014 last month, the Vauxhall Mokka shoots up to a spectacular 2nd place in April thanks to 552 sales and 3.5%. It is only beaten by the Ford Fiesta consolidating its 2014 leadership at 885 units and 5.6%, making the Mokka Vauxhall’s best-seller in Scotland above the Corsa at #3 and 548 sales! The Mokka now ranks #10 year-to-date. Further down, the Renault Clio remains very solid at #5 and the Dacia Sandero reappears inside the Scottish Top 10 for the first time since last December at #10.

VW Golf UK April 2014The VW Golf is the best-seller in Northern Ireland in April.

In Northern Ireland, big news atop the sales charts as well: the VW Golf brilliantly takes the lead of the overall ranking for the first time since we have been following monthly sales in the nation (June 2013) with 168 sales and 3.8% share, ahead of the Ford Fiesta (3.3%), Focus (3%) and Vauxhall Astra (2.7%). The Nissan Qashqai, boosted by the new model, is back up 6 spots on March to a beautiful 5th place while the Vauxhall Insignia (#8), Kia Sportage (#9) and Hyundai ix35 (#10) all make an exciting reappearance inside the Top 10.

Ford Kuga Wales January 2014The Ford Kuga ranks 4th in Wales this month.

In Wales, it’s a very stable models podium: identical to March and year-to-date with the Ford Fiesta in the lead at an astounding 10.2% market share followed by the Ford Focus (4.1%) and Vauxhall Corsa (2.8%). The big surprise comes in 4th position with the Ford Kuga making a smashing entrance into the Welsh Top 5 thanks to 135 sales and 2.1% share. Notice also the Fiat 500 solid at #6 and the Ford Ka jumping among the Top 10 best-sellers in Wales at #10.

Audi A3 England April 2014The Audi A3 also breaks its ranking record in England.

In England, traditionally the models ranking is very similar to the UK one as this nation represents 85% of overall UK sales in April. However there is an interesting difference in this month’s ranking: appearing in no other Top 10, the Audi A3 owes its record-breaking 5th position in the UK solely to its performance in England where it ranks at an even better 4th place thanks to 3,322 sales and 2.2% share, 88% of its UK total. This is actually the only difference in the Top 10.

Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you the best-sellers for each nation in the UK in March, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall March update. The UK market overall is in stunning shape in March at +18% year-on-year, with England, Northern Ireland and Wales matching that growth rate while Scotland (+15%) lies slightly behind.

Vauxhall Mokka UK March 2014The Vauxhall Mokka is #10 in Scotland.

In Scotland, the Vauxhall Corsa reclaims the top spot it has been holding over the Full Year continuously for the past 6 years thanks to 2,538 sales and 5.8% share, however this is not enough to pass the Ford Fiesta year-to-date yet at 3,195 units and 5.2% vs. 3,352 and 5.5%. The Ford Focus is strong in third place with 3.6% while the Renault Clio shoots up 5 spots on February to #4 both this month with 1,335 sales and 3.1% and year-to-date vs. #9 in 2013. Notice also the Vauxhall Mokka making its first appearance of the year inside the Scottish Top 10 at #10 just under 2% share.

Renault Captur UK March 2014The Renault Captur is #5 in Northern Ireland.

In Northern Ireland, below the Ford Fiesta consistent at 4.1% share both this month and year-to-date, here too the best performer is the Renault Clio. It jumps from outside the February Top 10 directly to second place thanks to 236 sales and 3.1% share and now ranks 10th year-to-date like in 2013. The Renault Captur for its part is up two further spots on February to rank 5th this month at 215 units and 2.8%, also shooting up to #9 year-to-date. Other notable performances include the 9th place of the Hyundai i10 and the 10th spot held by the Dacia Sandero with 2% market share.

In Wales, the entire Top 5 best-sellers are identical to the UK ranking overall with the Ford Fiesta leading the charge with a huge 9.4% market share followed by the Ford Focus (3.9%), Vauxhall Corsa (2.9%), VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra (both at 2%). The Fiat 500 over-performs in 6th place as does the Renault Clio in 7th. The Suzuki Alto holds onto its 10th spot thanks to 295 sales and 1.6% and ranks 9th so far in 2014 like in 2013.

Suzuki Alto UK March 2014. Picture courtesy of largus.frThe Suzuki Alto is #10 in Wales.

In England, traditionally the models Top 10 is very similar to the UK one as England accounts for 85% of the overall UK market in March. The Top 6 most popular models are identical to the overall UK ranking with the VW Golf delivering a slightly higher market share at 2.9% in 4th place. The BMW 3 Series is up from #9 overall to #7 in England with 6,986 sales and 1.8%, kicking the VW Polo and Fiat 500 down to #8 and #9 respectively, while the Audi A3 misses out on a Top 10 ranking for just 54 units.

Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall February update. With the UK market gaining ground year-on-year for the 24th consecutive time this month, we have Northern Ireland (+10%) over performing, England (+3%) level, while Scotland (-1%) and Wales (-5%) well below the national average and surprisingly into negative territory.

In Scotland, the Ford Fiesta accentuates its advantage over the rest of the market thanks to 349 sales and a massive 7% market share. It is followed like last month by the Vauxhall Corsa, while the Ford Focus gains one spot to round the podium and the VW Polo is up two to #4. Below the Ford Ka up 3 to #6 we welcome two models inside the Scottish monthly Top 10 for the first time: the VW Up lands directly at #7 with 100 sales and 2% and the Renault Captur ranks 8th thanks to 98 units and also 2% share, that’s 4 units above the Clio! Finally, the Citroen C1 in runout mode shining at #10.

Hyundai i10 UK February 2014The Hyundai i10 is #8 in Northern Ireland.

In Northern Ireland, the VW Golf manages to equal the Ford Fiesta for pole position this month, both models selling 168 units for a 3.8% market share. Volkswagen even places a second model on the podium with the Polo at #3 and 3.6%. Coming out of nowhere, the Suzuki Alto jumps up to #4 with 151 sales and 3.4%, earning it a #10 spot year-to-date. There are two more all-new entrants inside the Top 10 in February: the Renault Captur lands at #7 with 2.3% share and the Hyundai i10 at #8 with 2.2%. Finally, notice the Kia Sportage back up to #10.

Citroen C4 Picasso UK February 2014The Citroen C4 Picasso is #7 in Wales.

In Wales, below the Ford Fiesta (10.9% share!) and Focus (5.4%), traditional leaders here, we have a big surprise: the VW Up rounds up the podium whereas it had not ranked inside the Welsh Top 10 since BSCB started following this nation halfway through 2013. It sells 57 units for a 2.9% market share. Another surprise this month in Wales is the 7th place of the Citroen C4 Picasso boosted by the new model and selling 43 units for a 2.2% share, followed by the Vauxhall Zafira at 1.9% while the Suzuki Alto is back in the Top 10 at #10.

In England, traditionally the models Top 10 is very similar to the UK one as England accounts for 83% of the overall UK market in February. The only change is the Mercedes C-Class up a notch to #6 thanks to 1,127 sales and 2%, passing the VW Polo, and now ranking #9 year-to-date ahead of the Nissan Qashqai and Fiat 500 whereas it has not made it into the YTD Top 10 yet in the UK overall.
