Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you the best-sellers for each nation in the UK in March, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall March update. The UK market overall is in stunning shape in March at +18% year-on-year, with England, Northern Ireland and Wales matching that growth rate while Scotland (+15%) lies slightly behind.

Vauxhall Mokka UK March 2014The Vauxhall Mokka is #10 in Scotland.

In Scotland, the Vauxhall Corsa reclaims the top spot it has been holding over the Full Year continuously for the past 6 years thanks to 2,538 sales and 5.8% share, however this is not enough to pass the Ford Fiesta year-to-date yet at 3,195 units and 5.2% vs. 3,352 and 5.5%. The Ford Focus is strong in third place with 3.6% while the Renault Clio shoots up 5 spots on February to #4 both this month with 1,335 sales and 3.1% and year-to-date vs. #9 in 2013. Notice also the Vauxhall Mokka making its first appearance of the year inside the Scottish Top 10 at #10 just under 2% share.

Renault Captur UK March 2014The Renault Captur is #5 in Northern Ireland.

In Northern Ireland, below the Ford Fiesta consistent at 4.1% share both this month and year-to-date, here too the best performer is the Renault Clio. It jumps from outside the February Top 10 directly to second place thanks to 236 sales and 3.1% share and now ranks 10th year-to-date like in 2013. The Renault Captur for its part is up two further spots on February to rank 5th this month at 215 units and 2.8%, also shooting up to #9 year-to-date. Other notable performances include the 9th place of the Hyundai i10 and the 10th spot held by the Dacia Sandero with 2% market share.

Hyundai i10 UK March 2014. Picture courtesy of honestjohn.co.ukThe Hyundai i10 is #9 in Northern Ireland.

In Wales, the entire Top 5 best-sellers are identical to the UK ranking overall with the Ford Fiesta leading the charge with a huge 9.4% market share followed by the Ford Focus (3.9%), Vauxhall Corsa (2.9%), VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra (both at 2%). The Fiat 500 over-performs in 6th place as does the Renault Clio in 7th. The Suzuki Alto holds onto its 10th spot thanks to 295 sales and 1.6% and ranks 9th so far in 2014 like in 2013.

Suzuki Alto UK March 2014. Picture courtesy of largus.frThe Suzuki Alto is #10 in Wales.

In England, traditionally the models Top 10 is very similar to the UK one as England accounts for 85% of the overall UK market in March. The Top 6 most popular models are identical to the overall UK ranking with the VW Golf delivering a slightly higher market share at 2.9% in 4th place. The BMW 3 Series is up from #9 overall to #7 in England with 6,986 sales and 1.8%, kicking the VW Polo and Fiat 500 down to #8 and #9 respectively, while the Audi A3 misses out on a Top 10 ranking for just 54 units.

Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you the best-sellers for each nation in the UK in February, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall February update. With the UK market gaining ground year-on-year for the 24th consecutive time this month, we have Northern Ireland (+10%) over performing, England (+3%) level, while Scotland (-1%) and Wales (-5%) well below the national average and surprisingly into negative territory.

Renault Captur UK February 2014. Picture courtesy of autoexpress.co.ukThe Renault Captur is #7 in Northern Ireland and #8 in Scotland.

In Scotland, the Ford Fiesta accentuates its advantage over the rest of the market thanks to 349 sales and a massive 7% market share. It is followed like last month by the Vauxhall Corsa, while the Ford Focus gains one spot to round the podium and the VW Polo is up two to #4. Below the Ford Ka up 3 to #6 we welcome two models inside the Scottish monthly Top 10 for the first time: the VW Up lands directly at #7 with 100 sales and 2% and the Renault Captur ranks 8th thanks to 98 units and also 2% share, that’s 4 units above the Clio! Finally, the Citroen C1 in runout mode shining at #10.

Hyundai i10 UK February 2014The Hyundai i10 is #8 in Northern Ireland.

In Northern Ireland, the VW Golf manages to equal the Ford Fiesta for pole position this month, both models selling 168 units for a 3.8% market share. Volkswagen even places a second model on the podium with the Polo at #3 and 3.6%. Coming out of nowhere, the Suzuki Alto jumps up to #4 with 151 sales and 3.4%, earning it a #10 spot year-to-date. There are two more all-new entrants inside the Top 10 in February: the Renault Captur lands at #7 with 2.3% share and the Hyundai i10 at #8 with 2.2%. Finally, notice the Kia Sportage back up to #10.

Citroen C4 Picasso UK February 2014The Citroen C4 Picasso is #7 in Wales.

In Wales, below the Ford Fiesta (10.9% share!) and Focus (5.4%), traditional leaders here, we have a big surprise: the VW Up rounds up the podium whereas it had not ranked inside the Welsh Top 10 since BSCB started following this nation halfway through 2013. It sells 57 units for a 2.9% market share. Another surprise this month in Wales is the 7th place of the Citroen C4 Picasso boosted by the new model and selling 43 units for a 2.2% share, followed by the Vauxhall Zafira at 1.9% while the Suzuki Alto is back in the Top 10 at #10.

In England, traditionally the models Top 10 is very similar to the UK one as England accounts for 83% of the overall UK market in February. The only change is the Mercedes C-Class up a notch to #6 thanks to 1,127 sales and 2%, passing the VW Polo, and now ranking #9 year-to-date ahead of the Nissan Qashqai and Fiat 500 whereas it has not made it into the YTD Top 10 yet in the UK overall.

Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you the best-sellers for each nation in the UK in January, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall January update. With the UK market gaining ground year-on-year for the 23rd consecutive time this month, we have Wales (+22%), Northern Ireland (+20%) and Scotland (+9%) over performing, while England (+7%) is slightly below the national average.

Ford Ka Scotland January 2014The Ford Ka is #9 in Scotland.

In Scotland, the Ford Fiesta starts the year with a bang at 5.5% share, two percentage points above all other models including the VW Polo, #2 for the 2nd month running with 438 sales and 3.5%. The Renault Clio is up 6 spots on December to land at an excellent 4th position with 377 units sold for a 3% market share, the Fiat 500 is up two to #8 which is also its FY2013 ranking, and the Ford Ka points its bonnet in c0-8th place thanks to 261 sales and 2.1% share, the first time the Ka appears in any nation’s Top 10 since we started following these UK nations in detail mid-last year.

Hyundai ix35 Northern Ireland January 2014The Hyundai ix35 starts the year at #10 in Northern Ireland.

In Northern Ireland, the Ford Fiesta is only #1 thanks to 2 additional units sold over the Seat Ibiza this month, an incredible performance from the Spanish supermini, up from outside the Top 10 both in December and over the FY2013 directly to #2 with 282 sales and 4.2% share… The VW Polo also shines, back inside the Top 10 at #3 with 227 units and 3.4% vs. #7 and 2.3% over the FY2013 as does the Vauxhall Corsa at #4 and 2.8%. Finally, notice the Hyundai ix35 breaking into the Top 10 for the first time since last October at #10 with 113 sales and 1.7%.

Ford Kuga Wales January 2014The Ford Kuga ranks 7th in Wales this month.

In Wales, the Ford Fiesta lodges another bumper month at 9.7% share thanks to 530 sales, almost 3 times the score of the #2, the Ford Focus at 197 units and 3.6%. Here too the Seat Ibiza is the hero of the month, jumping from outside the Top 10 in December and over the FY2013 up to 4th position with 148 sales and 2.7% share. The Ford Kuga also impresses, up to #7 at 121 units and 2.2%, as does the Toyota Yaris up to #10 with 99 sales and 1.8%.

Nissan Juke England January 2014. Picture courtesy of largus.frThe Nissan Juke passes the Qashqai for the first time in England this month.

In England, for once the models Top 10 is noticeably different to the UK one even though England accounts for 84% of the overall UK market in January. Below the Ford Fiesta and Focus, the VW Golf is up to #3 with 3,849 sales and 3% share, passing the Vauxhall Corsa down to #4, the Audi A3 is up to a splendid 6th place here vs. #7 in the UK, overtaking the Vauxhall Astra to become #3 in its category below just the Focus and Golf, and finally the Nissan Juke is above its production line buddy the Nissan Qashqai for the very first time at #8 and 2,421 sales vs. #9 and 2,409.

Scotland (UK) Full Year 2013: Close call for the Vauxhall Corsa

January 9th, 2014 No comments

Vauxhall Corsa Scotland 2013The Vauxhall Corsa has been the best-seller in Scotland every year since 2008.

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

New car sales in Scotland are up 13% year-on-year in 2013 to 204,592 registrations, and the best-seller has now been unchanged for the last 6 years now: it’s the Vauxhall Corsa, but it was a very close call this year… Corsa sales are down 6% on 2012 to 10,996 units and 5.4% share vs. 6.5% in 2012, that’s less than 100 sales above the Ford Fiesta, up 7% to 10,897 units. It will be a hard crown to defend in 2014.

Fiat 500 Scotland 2013Fiat 500

The Ford Focus is up one spot to #3, passing the Vauxhall Astra at #4, while the VW Golf breaks into the Top 5 at #5. #11 in the UK overall, the Fiat 500 is up to a brilliant 8th place in Scotland thanks to 3,869 sales and 1.9% share and the Renault Clio is weirdly down from #5 in 2012 to #9 this year in spite of the arrival of the new generation. But the big question for 2014 is whether the Vauxhall Mokka (#4 in December) and the Dacia Sandero (#5 that same month) will earn a spot in the year-end Top 10…

Dacia Sandero Scotland December 2013Launched less than a year ago, the Dacia Sandero is already inside the Scottish Top 5 this month.

* See the Top 10 best-selling models for each nation by clicking on the title! *

Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you the best-sellers for each nation in the UK in December, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall December update. With the UK market is up an explosive 24% year-on-year in December, we have Northern Ireland (+28%) and England (+25%) over performing, while Wales (+15%) and Scotland (+12%) are a little behind but still display very robust growth.

Vauxhall Mokka Scotland December 2013The Vauxhall Mokka is #4 in Scotland this month

In Scotland, the Ford Fiesta is #1 again but finishes the year less than 100 units off the Vauxhall Corsa for #1. The VW Polo is very strong in 2nd place with 371 sales and 3.6% vs. #6 and 2.3% over the full year. But the two big surprises are below: the Vauxhall Mokka makes its very first appearance in any nation’s Top 10 at a fantastic 4th place thanks to 307 sales and just under 3% share. For its part the Dacia Sandero, only launched here last January, improves on an already very impressive November score (#7) to break into the Top 5 for the first time at #5 with 299 units and 2.9% share. 2014 will be fascinating to follow in Scotland, both models having the potential to lodge a Full Year Top 10 ranking. Notice also the Peugeot 308 back in great shape thanks to the new generation at #8 with 213 sales and 2%.

Skoda Fabia Wales December 2013The Skoda Fabia is #10 in Wales this month.

In Wales, the Ford Fiesta delivers an astonishing month at almost 12% market share thanks to 574 sales, finishing the year just under 9%. The Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra complete the podium like last month while the VW Golf is back up 5 spots to #6 which is also its full year ranking. Here too the big surprise is delivered by the Dacia Sandero up a further two spots on November to rank #7 best-seller with 91 sales and 1.9% share. The Renault Clio is also back inside the Top 10 for the first time since we have been following this nation back in July, at #8 with 1.6%. Finally we welcome the Skoda Fabia, lodging its first Top 10 ranking of any UK nation in 2013 at #10 with 72 units and 1.5% share.

Peugeot 308 Scotland December 2013The new generation is starting to impact sales of the Peugeot 308: #8 in Scotland in December.

In Northern Ireland, the Vauxhall Astra holds onto the pole position it already held in November thanks to 86 sales and 4.4% share vs. just #4 and 3.3% over the full year, dominating the Ford Fiesta at #2 and 3.5% vs. #1 and 4.4% in 2013. The Nissan Qashqai, #1 in October, is back on the podium at #3 with 64 sales and 3.3% while the Vauxhall Zafira is back inside the Top 10 at a brilliant 4th place with 2.8% share. Let’s also salute the fine performance of the Renault Clio at #7, Vauxhall Insignia at #8 and Toyota Yaris at #9 whereas the Ford Focus is kicked out of the Top 10.

In England, the ranking is traditionally and logically very similar to the UK one as England represents 89% of overall UK sales this month vs. 86% in November. Like in the UK, the Ford Fiesta dominates ahead of the Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Focus, with the only difference in the Top 10 being the Peugeot 208 managing to stay in it at #10 with 2,191 sales and 1.6%, kicking the Nissan Qashqai out at 2,179 units and 1.6% also.

Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you the best-sellers for each nation in the UK in November, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall update. If the UK market is up a flamboyant 7% year-on-year in November, Northern Ireland (+18%) and Wales (+13%) over perform, while Scotland (+6%) and England (+7%) are within the average.

In Scotland, the Ford Fiesta reclaims the pole position after a two month-hiatus thanks to 686 sales and 4.9%, adding up to 10,333 units and 5.3%, but this is not enough to pass the Vauxhall Corsa year-to-date at 10,662 and 5.5%. The Corsa should still be able to lodge a 6th consecutive year atop the Scottish sales charts this year. Good showing of the VW Polo up 4 spots on October to #4 while the Fiat 500 is down 3 to a still brilliant 6th place. But the big news is below: while the brand only launched in the country last January, the Dacia Sandero manages to claw its way within the 10 most popular models in Scotland for the very first time at #7 with a formidable 227 sales and 2% share! An extremely promising performance that should be improved in 2014. Notice also the Renault Clio back up to #8 and the Seat Ibiza breaking into the Top 10 at #10.

Renault Clio UK November 2013. Picture courtesy of carbuyer.co.ukThe Renault Clio is #7 in Northern Ireland and #8 in Scotland.

In Wales, the Top 4 best-sellers are identical to last month: the Ford Fiesta leads by far with 7.5% share, followed by the Ford Focus (3.6%), Vauxhall Astra (3.2%) and Vauxhall Corsa (2.8%). The VW Polo is back inside the Top 10 at #5 while both the Vauxhall Zafira and Ford C-Max are stable vs. October in 8th and 10th place respectively. Here too the big news come from French-Romanian brand Dacia: the Sandero historically breaks into the Welsh Top 10 for the very first time, shooting up to #9 with 97 sales and 1.7% share! This is a rather astounding performance for a carmaker that was unknown to all before this year. It will be fascinating to follow the Sandero’s progression in 2014 as Skoda’s success in the whole of the UK has demonstrated that customers are really keen for great value for money in this country.

Vauxhall Astra UK November 2013The Vauxhall Astra is #1 in Northern Ireland and #2 in England.

In Northern Ireland, the models ranking is back to some kind of normality after crowning the Nissan Qashqai in October. In fact, the entire Top 5 is reversed vs. October, with the Vauxhall Astra jumping from #5 to #1 at 109 sales and 3.5%, the Ford Focus up from #4 to #2, the Ford Fiesta stable at #3, VW Golf down from #2 to #4 and Nissan Qashqai from #1 to #5… The Nissan Juke is up one spot to reach #6, by far its highest ranking in all nations in the UK this month. Finally, the Renault Clio is back among the nation’s 10 most popular models at #7 with 81 sales and 2.6%, which earns it a #10 spot year-to-date.

In England, the ranking is logically very similar to the UK one as England represents 86% of overall UK sales this month. We still have a few differences in the Top 10: the Vauxhall Astra passes the Ford Focus to become #2 with 4,481 sales and 3.3%, the BMW 3 Series and Nissan Qashqai exchange spots to #7 at 2,776 units and 2% and #9 with 2,568 sales and 1.9% respectively. Year-to-date however, with the Vauxhall Astra now above the VW Golf at #4, there is now no difference in the Top 10 with the UK ranking.

Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you today the detailed models ranking for each nation in the UK, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall update. Overall the UK market is up 4% year-on-year in October but Northern Ireland (+13%), Scotland (+10%) and Wales (+7%) outperform, leaving England at +3%.

Fiat 500 UK October 2013The Fiat 500 is up to #3 in Scotland.

In Scotland, the Vauxhall Corsa consolidates its newly reacquired year-to-date lead thanks to 845 sales and 5.6% vs. 677 and 4.5% for the Ford Fiesta: looks like a 6th consecutive year at #1 is now becoming a reality! The most impressive performer is the Fiat 500, shooting up 3 spots on last month to brilliantly land on the Scottish podium at #3 with 515 units and 3.4%. Notice also the Nissan Qashqai back inside the Top 10 (and how!) at #4, the Peugeot 308 making its first appearance since I have had access to monthly data at #9, potentially the combined effects of rebates of the old gen and the new gen popping up, and the Kia Sportage at #10.

Audi A1 UK October 2013The Audi A1 breaks into the Welsh Top 10 this month…

In Wales, the Ford Fiesta continues to lead by far with 9.2% of the market which is double the score of the #2, the Ford Focus. The Vauxhall Astra is up 2 ranks on September to #3 and the Fiat 500 up 3 to #6. We welcome three new models inside the Welsh Top 10 compared to last month, two of them after a one month-absence: the Vauxhall Zafira is up to #8 with 126 sales and 2.1% and the Ford C-Max is up to #10 at 84 units and 1.4%. But the big surprise is the arrival of the Audi A1 at #9 with 91 sales and 1.5%!

Hyundai ix35 UK October 2013…while the Hyundai ix35 does so in Northern Ireland.

In Northern Ireland, and this is the big news of the month across all UK nations, the Nissan Qashqai does no less than taking the overall lead thanks to 138 sales and 3.9% share, up a huge 8 spots on September. The VW Golf also shines, up one to #2 at 125 units and 3.5%. Both models pass the two year-to-date leaders: the Ford Fiesta at #3 and 3.5% and the Ford Focus at #4 and 3.4%. The Vauxhall Zafira stays solid at #6 while the Hyundai ix35 makes its first appearance in the Top 10 since I’ve started getting access to national data at #10 with 65 sales and 1.8%.

Audi A3 sedan UK October 2013Audi A3 sedan

In England, as usual the ranking is very similar to the UK one as England represents 84% of overall UK sales. Below the Ford Fiesta leader at 5.4% share, the Ford Focus ranks #2 ahead of the Vauxhall Corsa vs. #3 in the UK, while the BMW 3 Series is up one spot vs. the overall UK ranking at #9. Replacing the Fiat 500, the Audi A3 points its bonnet at #10 in England thanks to 2,327 sales and 1.8%. The sedan effect already? Year-to-date, the VW Golf is still above the Vauxhall Astra at #4 whereas it is behind it in the overall UK ranking.

Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you once again the detailed models ranking for each nation in the UK, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall update. If the UK average is a splendid 12% year-on-year gain in September, Scotland (+14%) and Wales (+19%) do even better, with England and Northern Ireland in line with the UK average.

Vauxhall Corsa Scotland September 2013The Vauxhall Corsa is back to #1 in Scotland

In Scotland, the Vauxhall Corsa brilliantly reclaims the top spot both this month with 2,997 sales and 7.2% vs. 3.7% nationally and year-to-date at 9,207 units and 5.6%, passing the Ford Fiesta in each case. It now looks like the Corsa has a chance to lodge a 6th consecutive year atop Scottish sales charts. It’s a good month for Vauxhall in Scotland: while the Astra is down to #5 in the UK, it is up to #3 here at 3.8% share vs. 2.7% nationally. The Fiat 500 is up to #6 and 2.4% share, its highest of all nations this month, while the Renault Clio is back inside the Scottish Top 10 at #7 and the Peugeot 208 makes an appearance at #9.

Suzuki Alto Wales September 2013. Picture courtesy of telegraph.co.ukThe Suzuki Alto is back up to #7 in Wales.

In Wales, the Ford Fiesta nearly doubles its national market share at 9.5% and 8.7% year-to-date, with the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Corsa following like last month and year-to-date. The Nissan Qashqai remains at #6 and #5 year-to-date, while the Suzuki Alto makes a fantastic come-back inside the Top 10 (given September sales are more skewed towards private sales) at #7 and 1.9% vs. #8 and 1.7% year-to-date. Notice also the Toyota Yaris back up to #10 like year-to-date.

Vauxhall Zafira Northern Ireland September 2013The Vauxhall Zafira is up to #5 in Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, just below the Ford Fiesta and Focus very close this month the VW Golf continues to over-perform which is interesting given it is #1 in neighbouring Ireland. It captures 4% of the market here vs. 3% nationally and ranks #3 year-to-date vs. #5 in the UK. The Vauxhall Zafira is up 5 spots to a splendid 5th place with 161 sales and 2.7% while the Seat Ibiza is up from outside the Top 10 in August to an equally impressive 7th position at 146 units and 2.4%. Notice also the Renault Clio up to #10 and 2%.

BMW 1 Series England September 2013The BMW 1 Series does even better in England than nationally

In England, for once the ranking is actually different than the overall UK one. The Ford Focus is up to #2 with 11,837 sales and 3.5% vs. #3 nationally, passing the Vauxhall Corsa, the VW Golf’s advantage over the Vauxhall Astra this month means it also passes it year-to-date to rank #4, but most interestingly, while the BMW 1 Series smashes all records nationally, it does even better in England, breaking into the Top 5 at #5 with 9,011 sales and 2.7% and above the Vauxhall Astra…

Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you once again the detailed models ranking for each nation in the UK. This month I have compiled all nations into one singe update so it’s easier to compare them all. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall update. Compared to the UK average of 11% gain year-on-year this month, Scotland is up just 4%, but both Northern Ireland (+18%) and Wales (+16%) easily outperform England (+11%) which logically stands at the same level as the the UK average.

In Scotland, below the Ford Fiesta, the Vauxhall Corsa continues to overperform at #2 and 4% share vs. #5 and 3.3% overall, year-to-date the Corsa is even higher at 5% thanks to 6,210 sales. The hero of the month is without a doubt the BMW 1 Series, going from outside the Scottish Top 10 in July directly onto third position at 223 units and 3.7% vs. #6 and 2.9% overall in the UK. The 1 Series now appears inside the year-to-date Top 10 in Scotland at #10 with 1.6% share. The Kia Sportage is #9 for the 2nd time in a row while the Hyundai i10 appears at #10 with 123 sales and 2.1%.

In Northern Ireland, the top 2 best-sellers continue to impress both vs. the local year-to-date ranking and the UK overall: it’s the only nation where the Vauxhall Astra manages to top the sales charts thanks to 192 units and 4.9% vs. an already stunning #2 spot in the UK at 3.7%. Similarly, the VW Golf shines at #2 and 4% locally vs. an already solid #3 and 3.4% in the UK. Year-to-date however, the Ford Fiesta and Focus still dominate in Northern Ireland. Further down, the VW Polo is back up to #5 while the Nissan Juke delivers its best ranking in any nation in the UK this month at #6 thanks to an excellent 2.8% market share. Finally, notice the Vauxhall Zafira inside the Top 10 again at #10.

In Wales, paradoxically the smallest market has the most stable models ranking top. As in year-to-date both in Wales and the UK overall, the Ford Fiesta, Focus, Vauxhall Corsa and Astra are the most popular here. The Vauxhall Zafira maintains itself at a brilliant 5th spot thanks to 55 sales and 2.5% share while the Ford C-Max gains a further two ranks on July to rank #7 at 2.3% share. Lastly, the Fiat 500 appears inside the Top 10 at #10 with 2% share, making Wales the only nation in the UK to welcome the tiny Fiat among its 10 best-sellers this month.

In England, as usual not much wildness in the models ranking as this market represents over 80% of the overall UK total. In fact this month and year-to-date, the English sales charts are absolutely identical to the UK ones. Notice just the VW Golf (3.5% vs. 3.4%), Nissan Qashqai (2.9% vs. 2.8%), BMW 3 Series (2.5% vs. 2.3%) and Vauxhall Insignia (2% vs. 1.7%) delivering higher market shares.
