The Uruguayan new car market stops three consecutive years of decline in 2017 with a robust 19.5% year-year gain to 54.522 registrations, getting dangerously close to the all-time annual volume record set in 2013 at 57.333. The brands ranking is completely reshuffled, with Volkswagen snapping the lead for the first time in at least a decade thanks to deliveries up 48% to 14.7% share. Chevrolet does even better, almost doubling its sales year-on-year (+92%) and up three spots to #2 overall at 13.4%. Leader in 2016, Fiat skids to third place this year even though its sales are up 15%. Renault (+17%) remains in 4th place, overtaking Suzuki (+12%) while below, Citroen (+42%), Peugeot (+29%), Nissan (+28%) and Hyundai (+27%) all frankly beat the market inside the Top 10.

FAW tops all Chinese carmakers in Uruguay in 2017.

Uruguay used to be overseas market in the world where Chinese carmakers held the largest share: 23.3% in 2013. This has since gone down drastically, with sales for the 19 Chinese brands selling at least one unit in the country (out of a total of 47) edging up just 1% to 10.9% share in 2017. Once dominated by Chery which was the third best-selling brand overall in 2011, there’s a change of guard in 2017: FAW tops the Chinese ranks with sales up 58% to #12 overall, followed by Lifan (#13), BYD (#14), Great Wall (#17), Geely (#18), Dongfeng (#19), Chery (#21) and JAC (#22).

The Up (+28%) helps Volkswagen snap its first brands crown in at least a decade.

The models ranking also get a complete makeover for 2017: thanks to deliveries shooting up 146% the Chevrolet Onix takes the lead for the first time at an overbearing 8.3% market share, while the VW Up (+28%) manages to maintain itself in 2nd place and is joined on the podium by the VW Saveiro up a stunning 181% and 7 ranks to #3. Best-seller in 2016, the Fiat Uno implodes 37% to #4 this year ahead of the Chevrolet Prisma (+192%) and Fiat Strada (+131%). The Hyundai HB20 (#9) and Peugeot 208 (#11) also shine while the all-new Nissan Kicks lands directly at #13. The VW Amarok breaks into the Top 10 best-selling light commercials at #9.
