The Slovak new car market gains 9% in 2017 to 96.085 registrations. Skoda remains the most popular carmaker in the country by far but sees its market share erode to 19.7% from 20% a year ago due to a market-trailing 8% gain. Volkswagen (+14%) on the other hand advances to 9.4%, distancing Hyundai (+8%) and Kia (+7%) in a Top 4 unchanged on 2016. Peugeot (+8%), Suzuki (+20%) and Dacia (+13%) all overtake Opel (-13%) with Toyota breaking into the Top 10. Model-wise, after a two-year interruption by the Skoda Fabia, #1 in 2015 and 2016, the Skoda Octavia reclaims the models pole position, totalling five annual wins since 2010. In 2017 the Octavia is up 8% to 5.6% vs. -1% to 5.5% for the Fabia beaten for just 32 sales. The Skoda Rapid (-1%) remains in third place, meaning the Slovak podium is 100% Skoda for the 5th consecutive year. The Kia Cee’d is the most popular foreign nameplate for the third year in a row, edging up 1% to 2.9% share in 4th place overall. The VW Golf rallies back up 26% and three spots on 2016 to #5, above the Hyundai i30 (+15%), Suzuki Vitara (-8%) and Hyundai Tucson (+3%). The Kia Sportage (+5%) makes its return into the Slovak Top 10 at #10 (it ranked #8 in 2014).
