After a one year-hiatus, our exclusive South Pacific islands coverage resumes on BSCB. Tonga is a Polynesian archipelago composed of 177 islands spread over 700.000 km2 (270.000 sq mi) and stretching over 800 km (500 mi) in a north-south line, about a third of the distance from New Zealand to Hawaii.  It has 103.000 inhabitants, 70% of which lives on the main island of Tongatapu. The Tongan new car market is one of the smallest in the world, with just 63 units sold in 2017, up 12.5% on a year ago. This is Toyota territory through and through, with the Japanese manufacturer holding a gargantuan 84.1% market share vs. 80.4% in 2016 thanks to deliveries up 18%. Only Hyundai (9.5%) and Mazda (6.3%) are also present on the archipelago, whose car sales are for a large part used. The Toyota Hilux is estimated to top the Tongan models charts.
