Final data for the Full Year 2016 is now available for Europe 29 countries – Russia and Turkey excluded. We now have access to the complete brands ranking and the Top 385 models. 23 new nameplates have made their apparition in the European sales charts this year, and now is the time to pick out the winners from the losers. At the top of the ladder we find the Seat Ateca at #156. Seat’s first SUV fills a gaping hole in the brand’s lineup and will climb up much further up throughout 2017, potentially inside the FY2017 Top 50. The Jaguar F-Pace is the true revelation of the year, landing directly at #163 with an incredible 20.222 sales, the brand’s 2nd best-seller across the continent below the XE at 24.477. The F-Pace has allowed Jaguar to leap up 70% in 2016 and will be Jaguar’s best-seller here in 2017. The Suzuki Baleno is on the newcomer’s podium at #181 with 14.389 sales, but its success has been eclipsed by the arrival of the Ignis (#273) in November.
The Ford Ka+ (#199) and Alfa Romeo Giulia (#200) are the only other two all-new models in the 2016 European Top 200, with five-digit volumes. The Ka+ is slowly imposing itself in small car-thirsty markets such as Italy, while the Giulia’s main focus in 2017 will be North America where its format is more tuned in with local customer tastes. Breaking the mould of bland hybrid sedans, the Kia Niro has created its own niche and been met with success so far in Europe: it ranks #213 in 2016, well ahead of the Hyundai Ioniq at #240. The Toyota C-HR only needed two months of sales to leap up to #220 and will definitely crack the Top 50 in 2017. The Mercedes SLC (#223), Fiat 124 Spider (#243), Tesla Model X (#244), Maserati Levante (#254) and Bentley Bentayga (#284) all impress, with the Volvo S90/V90 (#246) struggling to convince at home in Sweden.
