Car manufacturers around the world (but mainly in Japan) can breathe a sigh of relief: the shocking 20% drop of the Indonesian new car market – one of the world’s strongest engines of growth – was a freak event. August is back up by a spectacular 21% to 96,728 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to a record-breaking 816,053 units, up 3% on 2013. The Toyota Avanza remains the most popular model in the country by far but stays at levels close to its lowest-ever share (hit last month at 12.2%) at 12.6% in August on 12,208 sales. The Honda Mobilio for its part, after hitting a best-ever 10% market share last May, seems to have stabilised around 7% of the Indonesian market, grabbing 6.9% in August like in July thanks to 6,706 sales.
The Toyota Agya is back up 2 spots on July to round up the podium like it does year-to-date at 4,879 units and 5%, while its twin the Daihatsu Ayla is down 3 to #11. The Daihatsu Gran Max pick-up and Suzuki Ertiga are both up two spots to #4 and #5 respectively, kicking the Toyota Kijang Innova down to #6 but not overtaking it year-to-date. The Daihatsu Xenia takes an even harsher beating, going from #3 in July to #7 this month and losing its #6 year-to-date spot to the Ertiga. Excellent hold of the Honda Jazz at #9 and 3.2% share thanks to the new gen, the Honda Brio Satya is up two ranks to #10, the Datsun Go+ is stable at #14 and lodges a record 2,424 sales and we welcome the Nissan Grand Livina and Daihatsu Gran Max Minibus back inside the Top 20.
