After gaining 47% year-on-year in March and 53% in April, the Portuguese new car market ‘slows down’ in May at +37% to 13,779 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 60,047 units, up 42% on 2013. The Renault Clio lodges another very strong month at 6% share and 821 sales, above its year-to-date level of 5.3%, with the VW Polo in tow this month at a very impressive 5.2% vs. 3.5% year-to-date. The Opel Corsa is up 5 spots on April to a splendid third place with 451 sales, thanks to a combination of runout prices on the current generation and strong rental orders in anticipation of summer. As a result the Peugeot 208 is kicked down to #4 but remains #2 YTD.
First appearance of the VW Golf Sportsvan in the Portuguese charts this month.
Other great performers this month include the Seat Ibiza up 4 spots to #5 vs. #10 year-to-date, the Peugeot 308 up 6 to #8 vs. #14 and the Citroen C3 up a massive 15 ranks to #9. Further down, notice also the Fiat 500L up 18 to #43, the Mercedes GLA breaking into the Portuguese Top 50 for the first time at #48, the Kia Carens landing directly at #80, the VW Golf Sportsvan #86 and the Ford Ecosport up to #102.
