Never before had Argentinean customers purchased that many cars in a single year: up 14% on 2012 to 955,023 registrations, almost 100,000 more than the previous record of of 857,983 reached in 2011! The symbolic 1 million milestone could well be passed in 2014… The Chevrolet Classic remains the most popular vehicle in the country for the 4th consecutive year, however it loses over one percentage point of market share and 13% in volume to 37,018 units and 3.9% and if it ranked #1 for 11 of 12 months in 2012, it led the way only 4 times this year, even dropping to #11 in December… This could be its last year on top! The VW Gol Trend remains #2 with 34,040 sales and 3.6% (+3%) and topped the monthly charts 3 times whereas it had never managed that feat before this year.
The Ford Ecosport is up to a world-best 4th place in Argentina in 2013.
The superstar of the year is without contest the Renault Clio Mio, in actual fact a facelifted 1998 Renault Clio II, landing directly on the third step of the podium with 33,133 units and 3.5% share for its first full year in market. It led the ranking in November and will be a serious contender to the overall pole position in 2014… There are two other stars in the Argentinean models ranking this year are they are both inside the Top 5: the Ford Ecosport takes advantage of the launch of the new model to gain 53% and 7 spots on 2012 and reach #4 with 32,445 sales and 3.4% while the Renault Duster does even better, up 60% to #5 at 30,784 units and 3.2%, even topping the sales charts in December! The Peugeot 207 Compact also led the monthly rankings (3 times) but took a hit with the launch of the 208 and as a result is down 3 spots to #6.
The Peugeot 208 is the most successful new nameplate in Argentina in 2013.
Other great performers this year in Argentina include the Fiat Siena up 51% to #11 thanks to the arrival of the Grand Siena, the Peugeot 308 up 45% yo #14, Ford Fiesta Kinetic up 74% to #16, Fiat Palio up 70% to #18, Citroen Nuevo C3 up to #27 and Chevrolet Spin up to #33. 5 all-new nameplates manage to make their way into the year-end Top 60 this year: the Peugeot 208 leads the way at #24 with 13,351 sales, peaking at #3 in August and September, followed by the Chevrolet Onix at #39, Chevrolet Cobalt at #47, Ford Focus III at #58 and Toyota Etios at #60. There are two Chinese models in the Top 100 vs. 3 in 2012: the Chery QQ at #58 (+29%) and Tiggo at #62 (+30%). Brand-wise, Volkswagen drops 3% and almost 3 percentage points to 16.6% while Renault gains 18% and one spot to #2 and 14.7% and could be a threat to the overall #1 spot in 2014 – the French manufacturer even debuted in the lead of the monthly brands ranking this year and repeated this feat twice.
