Peruvian new car sales data is very rare – it pops up once or twice a year on average – so it’s with great excitement that I share with you today a Top 10 brands and Top 20 models for the first 9 months 2013. These are the most detailed model ranking for Peru in 8 years – since 2005 when I visited the country! After reaching all-time highs in 2010 (120,800 registrations), 2011 (144,485) and 2012 (178,373), you’d think the Peruvian new car market would take a break in 2013. Not so. It is up a further 9% over the first 9 months to 151,647 units and should finish the year above 190,000 sales for the very first time.
The Toyota Hilux is the most popular vehicle in the country thanks to 9,441 sales and 6.2% share, followed by the Toyota Yaris which has been Peru’s best-selling Passenger Car for the most part of the last decade, at 8,527 units and 5.6%. Like in 2012, the Chevrolet Sail rounds up the podium with 4,815 sales and 3.2%. There is a newcomer inside the Top 5: the Kia Picanto is up to #4 and 3%, kicking its big sister the Kia Rio down to #5 and 2.5% and the Hyundai Accent to #6 and 2.6%.
Apart from two Chevrolets, the entire Top 20 is composed of Japanese and Korean models! Notice the Hyundai i10 at #9, Kia Sportage at #10, Toyota RAV4 at #12, Suzuki Alto at #18, Hyundai Eon at #19 and the antediluvian Nissan Sentra V16 (aka Nissan Tsuru) at #20. Brand-wise, Toyota leads the way with 18.4% share, ahead of Hyundai at 13.5%, Kia at 10.9%, Chevrolet at 9.9%, Nissan at 6.2% and Suzuki at 4.6%.
