The Indian new car market slows down its decline in September to just -3% year-on-year at 207,198 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,833,683 units, down 8% on 2012. By far in the lead, the Maruti Alto delivers its best monthly volume in 6 months at 23,620 units, while below the Maruti Swift and DZire the Wagon R is at its highest in one year at 15,448 sales. The big event this month is the thunderous arrival at the Top 5’s doorstep of the all-new Hyundai Grand i10, up 24 spots on August to land at #6 with 8,411 sales and 4.1% share for its 2nd appearance in the Indian ranking! The Grand i10 is manufactured in Chennai and is in fact a new generation i10 with a stretched wheelbase tailored specifically to Indian tastes, and it seems to work very well so far!
Even though the Grand i10 is not supposed to replace the i10 in India, the latter is down 11 ranks on August to #19 while the Eon is down 3 to #8 and the Santro down one to #26. There are two additional great performers in the Indian Top 10 this month: the Honda Amaze breaks its monthly volume record to 6,679 sales at #7, and the Ford Ecosport continues its splendid career, up one further spot to a best-ever #9 with a record 6,203 sales and 3% share… The Renault Duster is slowly recovering from the full frontal hit it coped from the Ecosport but is still lagging way behind at #16.
