Swiss new car sales are down 5% year-on-year in August to 20,996 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 203,634 units, down 9% on 2012. The VW Golf is as strong as ever this month, selling 879 units for a 4.2% market share which is above its year-to-date level of 3.9%. The Skoda Octavia for its part is at 2.9%, exactly the same as year-to-date, thanks to 608 sales while the BMW 3 Series reinforces its third position so far in 2013 at 447 units and 2.1%, above the VW Polo at 1.8%.
One year ago, the Subaru XV triggered an earthquake by taking the top spot overall above the Skoda Octavia and VW Golf. It had since fallen back to the mid-twenties, ranking #25 last month. August seems to have a particular flavour for Subaru’s mini SUV: it is up 20 ranks on July to land at a –less impressive, granted, but still fantastic – 5th place with 338 sales and 1.6%. The other great performer in the Swiss Top 10 this month is the Hyundai i20, up 20 spots to #6 at 324 units and 1.5%. Notice also the Ford Kuga once again extremely strong at #8 vs. #22 year-to-date and the BMW 1 Series back inside the Top 10 at #9.
The Mazda CX-5 ranks inside the Swiss Top 20 for the very first time this month.
Further down, we’ll pay special attention to the Mini stable at #13 vs. #20 year-to-date, the Fiat 500 up one spot to #16 vs. #27, Toyota Auris up 14 to #18 and Subaru Forester up 38 to #34. Finally, the Mazda CX-5 breaks into the Swiss Top 20 for the very first time this month, up 15 ranks on July to #20 with 237 sales and 1.1% share.
