The Indian new car market is back into positive territory in August, up 6% year-on-year to 180,897 registrations, however keep in mind that August 2012 was disrupted by Maruti labour unrest. This brings the year-to-date total to 1,626,485 units, down 8% on 2012. As it has now become the norm in India, 4 Marutis lead the models ranking: the Alto keeps the lead with 17,124 sales, followed by the Swift at 14,152, the Dzire at 13,723 and the Wagon R at 12,748. The Hyundai Eon is up 2 spots to #5, its best ranking so far in 2013, while the Hyundai Amaze gains one to rank 7th with 6,242 sales, not its strongest monthly volume but definitely its highest ever ranking in India.

The locally-produced Ford Ecosport confirms the Top 10 spot it acquired last week at #10, selling a record 5,372 units for a 3% market share, single-handedly pushing Ford up to #7 brand and taking a significant advantage over the Renault Duster, down to #18 and 2,967 sales. The Chevrolet Beat is up 5 ranks to #19, the Chevrolet Enjoy (aka Wuling Hongguang) down two to #28 and the Tata Nano is stuck at #29. Finally, we welcome a newcomer in the ranking this month: the Hyundai Grand i10, and all-new model (contrary to what its name might suggest) positioned between the i10 and the i20 in India but in fact the 2014 i10 for Europe, landing directly at #30 with 1,847 sales.
