As is now the tradition, after going through the July models ranking in detail and focusing on the all-new models making their first appearance in the sales charts, we go through the year-to-date figures for China to try and extract longer term trends. The first striking element looking at the best-selling passenger cars in the country so far in 2013 compared to 2012 is the complete reshuffle atop the ranking. The VW Lavida was #9 one year ago but thanks to the new model and its new station wagon version, it is up 8 spots and more than doubles its sales figure to land in pole position at 252,444 units, the first time a passenger car crosses the quarter-of-a-million sales landmark only 7 months into the year. The Ford Focus at #2 is almost equally impressive: up 5 ranks and 70% to 218,617 sales.
Sales of VW Lavida have more than doubled year-on-year…
Below these two astoundingly successful models we find two vehicles that progress less than the market and as a result both drop two spots year-on-year: the Buick Excelle up 2% but down to #3 and the Chevrolet Sail up 1% but down to #4. The 5th position is another high achiever: the VW Sagitar (the current generation Jetta) is up 15 spots and a massive 82% to 162,405 units, ahead of the VW Jetta down 3 ranks to #6 and the VW Passat (+4%) and Bora (+6%), both down 2 spots to #7 and #8 and making it an amazing 5 Volkswagens in the Top 8 so far in 2013…
Only an elongated version (“L”) of the BMW 5 Series is on sale in China.
The Nissan Sylphy is the only Japanese model in the Top 15, up 17 ranks and 90% year-on-year to #9 and 131,023 units while the Chevrolet Cruze is down 6 spots and 7% to #10. Let’s also salute the solid showing of the Buick Excelle XT/GT, now at the Top 10’s doorstep, up 5 ranks and 24% to #11 and just above the best performing all-new model over the period: the Hyundai Elantra Langdong landing directly at #12 with 119,396 sales. Notice also the VW Polo up 52% to #21, the VW Santana up 33% to #24, Hyundai ix35 up 76% to #26 and the BMW 5 Series L up 34% to #30 and getting closer to its archenemy the Audi A6L up just 5% to #23.
The Great Wall Haval H6 is the new local king, thanks to sales up 195% year-on-year.
For the first time in half a decade, there are signs indicating that Chinese models could be on the up again at home, illustrated by the first monthly Top 10 ranking by a local in almost 18 months in July. If at this stage last year no local had managed to sell more than 100,000 units, in 2013 there are two: the Great Wall Haval H6, new local king thanks to sales up a whopping 195% to 107,796 (#17) and the Emgrand EC7 also extremely impressive at +43% to 102,312 units (#19). In fact the local hierarchy is totally reshuffled this year: the Great Wall Voleex C30 is the third best-seller at #28 while last year’s #1 the FAW Xiali N3/N5/N7 is down to #9 and #48 and the #2 (Chery QQ) is down to #4 and #31.
Sales of BYD L3 are up 52% year-on-year, earning it a spot inside the Top 50.
While there are only 3 Chinese in the Top 30 in 2013 vs. 6 last year, 10 locals make their way inside the Top 50 this year vs. only 8 in 2012, and most of them are new at this level: the BYD F3 Surui is the third best-selling all new model (below the Hyundai Elantra Langdong and the Kia K3) at #33 with 71,091 sales, the Great Wall Haval M4 is up 115 spots and a mammoth 504% to #34, the Dongfeng Future up 21 ranks and 63% to #38, the BYD L3 up 19 spots and 52% to #45 and the Roewe 350 up 21 and 52% to #49.
The Ford Kuga is the 4th best-selling all-new model in 2013, pushing Ford sales up 72%.
If only 3 all-new models make their way inside the Chinese Top 50 over the period (see above), an additional 8 land within the Top 100: the Ford Kuga at #62, ChangAn Yuexiang V3 at #65, ChangAn Honor at #67, Hyundai Santa Fe at #71, ChangAn CS35 at #73, Brilliance H230 at #78, Buick Encore at #91 and the Peugeot 3008 at #98. Then we welcome the Ford Ecosport at #109, Citroen C4L at #115, Chevrolet Captiva at #123 and the Fiat Viaggio at #125.
Sales of Beijing E-Series are up 317% so far in 2013.
Notice also the Chevrolet Malibu up 298% to #47, Venucia R50/D50 up 218% to #55, ChangAn Eado up 227% to #61, BMW 3 Series L up 127% to #75, Great Wall Voleex C50 up 100% to #80, Zotye Z300 up 908% to #90, Gleagle GX7 up 166% to #108, Mercedes GLK up 172% to #124 and the Beijing E-Series up 315% to #127.
