New Kei cars sales resist somewhat this month: down just 2% year-on-year to 183,915 registrations, which brings the year-to-date total to 1,070,616 units, also down 2% on 2012 and positioning the Japanese Kei car market right inbetween UK total sales (1,163,623) and France (930,320)… The models podium is unchanged on last month: the Daihatsu Move holds the top spot for the third month in a row thanks to 18,179 sales, up 21% year-on-year, and is followed by the Honda N-Box (-23%) and Suzuki Wagon R (-7%). The N-Box remains #1 year-to-date however at 118,303 units vs. 114,101 for the Move.
But the big event this month is the thunderous arrival of the Nissan Dayz, the first product of a new Kei car collaboration between Nissan and Mitsubishi which is off to a flying start. The Dayz is up to a fantastic 4th place with 12,232 sales and already ranks #15 year-to-date. Its twin the new look Mitsubishi eK is up 7 spots on May and 268% year-on-year to #9 at 8,693 units. This means both models already add up to 20,925 sales for their first full month of sales in the country, a level that would place them at #1 in the Kei car ranking and #2 overall below only the Toyota Prius!
