Now that we have gone through the brands ranking in detail for Europe, let's explore the models sales charts. In a market down 6% this month to 1,083,930 registrations which is the weakest May figure in 20 years, there are still a bunch of models in the Top 10 that deliver year-on-year growth. In pole position for the 38th consecutive month and for the 58th time in the last 60 months, the VW Golf only drops by 0.7% to 40,695 sales which is almost 15,000 units above the 2nd best-selling model... Year-to-date, the Golf is once again down less than the market at -2% and 196,097 sales. The Ford Fiesta is back up 3 spots to #2 at 26,530 units (-6%) and also reclaims the #2 spot year-to-date thanks to 127,675 sales, down 12% on 2012.

For only the third time since its original launch a little more than a year ago, the Peugeot 208 appears on the European podium at #3 with 23,020 sales, up 111% on May 2012 when its sales were still gearing up. The 208 is #5 year-to-date below the Renault Clio, up 6% to #5 this month, and the VW Polo, down 8% to #6. The Opel Corsa in 4th position makes it 5 superminis in the Top 6 this month. The other two models to register year-on-year growth in May are the BMW 3 Series, stable at an excellent 8th place with 17,837 sales (+6%) and the Nissan Qashqai, every month more impressive than the last, up 11% to #9 at 17,393 units.

    Non premium cars made in the UK are Opel/Vauxhall Astra, Nissan Note, Nissan Juke, Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Leaf, Toyota Auris, Toyota Avensis, Honda Jazz (at the moment), Honda Civic and Honda CR-V. I think that is it.

    53% of cars selled in france are french ( Dacia included, 80% of cars selled in germany are germans ( opel, Skoda, Ford included ).

    Peugeot-Citroen represent 4% of the german market, even ford or opel has 3-4 % of the french one. Volkswagen has 8%. The reability of Volkswagen is not really good since 2004, i’m afraid. So why still a good resale value?

    I don’t think people are likely to buy a car purely on it being ‘Made in Germany’ or ‘Made in France’.

    Resale is important in light of the state of the economy, which the premium brands & VW do well on, at least in the UK. If other European car makers (French, GM, Ford and Fiat) didn’t make unreliable cars for much of the 90′s & 00′s, they might have better reputations (and resale values) today.

    Considering the amount of brand loyalty French car makers enjoy in France, it might be a bit much to criticize Germany for the same!

    I’m french and with Italy and “chinese-swedish” brand, we’re alone to prevent Europe for being 100% german in cars. Included Toyota Yaris made in the north of France and Smart at the east of France.

    Which models are still made in UK? Vauxhall is still strong ?

    I agree, Volkswagen make one or two excellent cars (Up!, Golf 7 and Scirocco) but also some very boring ones, Polo, Passat and Touran, reliability is not always as good as it should be, us British seem to be easily fooled by a brand name, glad to see the 208 selling well, the BMW 3 Series deserves its success. I am pleased about the about the continuing success of the Qashqai, the British economy needs all the help it can get.

    The big problem in Europe is that germans don’t buy much cars from France, Sweden or Italia. Those countries shouldn’t buy german cars as well.

    Volkswagen is the most boring cars in Europe, except coccinelle or up ! And german fiability and particully Volkswagen and Audi has become weaker than Peugeot-Renault-Citroen-Dacia.

    Clio is above because it’s Clio 3 and 4 together ! For Peugeot, we don’t count 207 and 208 together…

    I don’t think it’s likely to happen. All the cars currently in the top 10 (with the possible exception of the Clio) are in the Top 20 in two of the biggest 3 markets. The 2008 will have to sell very well in the UK or Germany as well as France to stand a good chance.

    Good performance for the 208, although year-to-date the Clio is still above.
