Could this be the end of the tunnel for the Portuguese new car market? In January, sales are up a shy but positive 0.3% year-on-year to 7,007 registrations… Only brands figures are available for now, and they show Renault in the lead as it was the case over the Full Year 2012 but not one year ago: the French manufacturer sells 726 units for 10.4% market share, up 23% on January 2012 when it ranked #3. Volkswagen (-12%) and Peugeot (-13%) follow.
Confirming the ‘premium or low-cost’ trend observed throughout Europe, the most impressive feat of the month is delivered by the 3 premium German brands: BMW is up 39% to #4 and 8.6% share, Mercedes up a whopping 70% to #5 and 8% and Audi up 19% to #6 and 7.3%, adding up to a massive 23.9% share vs. 26.5% in Germany… Notice also Nissan up 33% to #11, Dacia up 79% to #18, Mazda up 100% to #25 and Jaguar up 106% to #27.
