Excellent start of the year for the Danish new car market, prompting me to ask: where is this going to stop? Both 2011 and 2012 were indeed record years for new car sales in Denmark, an even more remarkable feat in the current depressed European economic context. January is up a further 14% year-on-year to 14,746 registrations, and 2012’s most popular model, the VW Up!, continues to amaze, hitting its highest market share in the country so far at 10.4% thanks to 1,537 sales, itself the model’s 2nd best monthly volume after the 1,640 it delivered last November.
The Peugeot 208, up 4 spots to #2 at 696 units and 4.7%, also reaches its highest ranking, volume and share so far in the country while for the Ford Ka, up a huge 33 ranks on December to #3 with 565 sales and 3.8% this is the current generation’s best in Denmark. The Skoda Citigo is down 2 to a still world-best #4 at 447 units and 3% and with the Seat Mii back up to #15 with 258 sales and 1.7%, the Bratislava sisters add up a massive 2,242 sales and 15.2% vs. 771 and 5.2% for the Kolin sisters (Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107, Citroen C1)… Notice also the Toyota Auris up to #11 vs. #73 in FY2012, the Kia Cee’d up to #12 vs. #32, Mazda6 up to #26 vs. #60, Volvo V40 up 21 spots to #31 and the Fiat 500L landing at #55.
