China: 6,000 Fiat Viaggio sold since mid-September

Fiat Viaggio

I know a lot of you have been asking for Chinese sales figures for the Fiat Viaggo, given local production started in June and sales in mid-September. Until today no data was available as it seems GAC-Fiat would not communicate anything to Chooseauto which is my source for monthly sales in China. Yesterday however, Italian website Quattroruote.it published a very positive article about the Viaggio’s Chinese sales, quoting Jack Chang – Managing Director of the GAC-Fiat joint venture.

And for the first time Viaggio sales in China are revealed to be 6,000 so far since launch, with the production level currently at 200 per day. Chang says Fiat is now aiming at selling 15,000 units by the end of the year in the 110 Fiat dealerships across the country. Now are these figures strong? The article raves about them but let’s have a closer look and put them into perspective…

Current China post: China October 2012: Ford Focus #1, only one Japanese in Top 50!

One year ago: China October 2011: Baojun 630 and Brilliance H530 take off

See the rest of the article below.

There are no true possible launch comparison within Fiat as this is the first model produced in China for the brand in many years. 6,000 units would position the Fiat Viaggio at #205 in the 2012 year-to-date ranking and #25 new model for 2012, slightly below the MG5 and FAW Oley and above the Honda Elysion and Kia K3, the latter having achieved 5,405 sales in a single month.

If we bring it back to a monthly figure we have 3,000 sales which would make the Viaggio #124 in October. This is where it suddenly doesn’t look as good. That’s the same level as the Venucia R50/D50, Zotye 5008, Peugeot 307, Lifan 320, old gen Kia Cerato and old gen Hyundai Elantra, while other newcomers are delivering much higher figures: 18,207 for the Hyundai Elantra Langdong, 15,093 for the Great Wall Haval H6 or 8,565 for the BYD F3 Surui…

So these are still significant numbers but we are not there yet. Hopefully Fiat will start communicating monthly figures so I can incorporate the Viaggio in my monthly rankings.

The monthly trend is actually pretty good: 900 (Sept) – 2000 (Oct) – 4000 (Nov) – 8000 (Dec).

Of course the last two months are just sales forecast but the production ramp up for a reason I guess.

You can find the data at the GAC website, I don’t have the link though, try to goggle it ;) .

Hey everybody. Come and check my latest post of how should be Fiat-Chrysler strategy for Chinese market. By the way ‘Speedal’, what do you think of these results? on November 15th you said that due to lack of official data “MAybe no sales yet for Fiat Viaggio… something in common with many new products from Lingotto worldwide…” Now you don’t comment on that but you bet they won’t publish any data. You should learn not to speculate that much. My post:

Even though the production has started earlier, the car was available for sales only from mid september, so the numbers don’t look that bad.
