Irish licence plates are stamped with the year of registration, so new car sales in the country are at their strongest in January and slip down to minuscule numbers towards the end of the year. As such in October only 1,661 new cars found a buyer, down from 2,487 in September and 3,098 in August but up 6% year-on-year compared to October 2011, bringing the year-to-date total to 78,286 units, down 12% on 2011.

A smaller market means a more volatile models ranking and in October the Skoda Octavia takes the lead, albeit with just 67 sales for a 4.2% market share. It is #6 year-to-date at 2,367 units and 3%. The VW Golf is #2 like in the year-to-date ranking, followed by the Ford Focus at #3 but still #1 by far year-to-date with 3,656 sales and 4.7%. The Kia Cee’d is up 40 spots on last month to #4, the VW Passat is down two to #5 and the Renault Fluence up 37 to #6.

Further down, notice the Hyundai Santa Fe up 96 ranks to #15, the Mazda6 up 11 to #19, the Skoda Citigo breaking into the Irish Top 50 for the first time, up 28 spots to #27, the Audi A5 up 67 to #36, Toyota Verso up 25 to #38, the Mazda5 up 75 to #43 and the Ford B-Max selling 5 units at #67 – not a good timing for a new model launch in Ireland…but sales of the model will most probably take off next January.

    @Sheila
    quality is almost the same but
    anyway…
    I think Skoda is the most “sadness brands” in Europe by decades, I think when You buy a car this must give an emotional sign in people… and Skoda appears to me like gray brand of box with wheels… just when I see one on street and sure worst if I imagine one of these opening my garage at morning. What sad life! :/

    you both are lost if you talk about vw and quality in the same sentence.

    @Sheila
    No, Skoda quality on the Yeti and Superb models is BETTER than on the equivalent VW models, a fact highlighted by many magazine road tests. The Skoda Superb and VW Passat were tested by Auto Express and the Skoda won. Skoda consistently beat VW, and all other manufacturers in all the reliability surveys.Octavia current shape is a little lower than Golf, but again, the new Octavia due in a few months, is a match for the new Golf. I would say the only Skoda models without the equal quality of a VW are the Fabia and Roomster. The Citigo is an equal match for the up! as they are all built in the one factory.

    Everybody says VW and Skoda got the same quality, do you agree?
