The Swiss new car market is down a harsh 18% in September to 21,166 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 245,526 units, still up 5% on 2011. After the Subaru XV wrote history in August by snapping up the models pole position away from the VW Golf, this month is another eventful one with the Skoda Octavia taking control with a comfortable margin! It sells 725 units for a sweet 3.4% market share vs. 565 and 2.7% for the VW Golf, beaten for the 2nd consecutive month. In the absence on monthly models ranking before this year it is impossible to be 100% certain but it’s fair to assume that the Golf not ranking #1 for two months in a row could be a once-in-at-least-a-decade event…

Year-to-date and with 3 more months to go before the end of 2012, the Octavia totals 7,831 sales and 3.2% vs. 9,257 and 3.8% for the Golf. In other words, for the Octavia to topple the Golf in the Swiss Full Year 2012 ranking, VW’s best-seller would have to sell close to nothing until the end of the year. There is still a remote possibility that this could happen as the 6th generation Golf is now fading away and will pass the relay to the 7th in that period, so stock issues could arise.

Subaru XV

Leader last month, the Subaru XV is now down to a more reasonable but still absolutely outstanding third place with 486 units and 2.3%. It is now #15 year-to-date at 2,845 sales and 1.2%. Other great performers in Switzerland this month include the Ford Focus up 11 spots on August to #4, the Ford Kuga up 22 to #7, the Suzuki SX4 up 33 to #12, the Mazda CX-5 up 38 to #26, the Mercedes A-Class up to #35, the Kia Cee’d up to #69 and the Dacia Lodgy up to #72.

BMW X3

BMW has a fantastic month in Switzerland: the X3 is up 14 ranks to an exceptional 10th place at 312 units and 1.5%, the 3 Series is up 6 to #13 with 267 sales and 1.3%, the 5 Series also up 6 to #15 at 253 units and 1.2%, the X1 ranks #21 with 229 sales and 1.1% vs. #40 and 0.7% year-to-date and the 1 Series is up to #23 with 221 units and 1%.
