19,639 new vehicles changed hands in Ukraine in August, bringing the year-to-date total to 131,018 units. After a historical month of July that saw a Chinese model, the Geely CK, climb to pole position for the first time in a major country outside China, the models ranking is back to normality in August. The Skoda Octavia hold the top spot for the first time since last May and the 5th time in the last 7 months with 739 sales and 3.8%, reinforcing its year-to-date domination at 5,554 units and 4.2%. The Lada Samara is up 3 spots to #2 with 661 sales and 3.4% and the ZAZ Sens rounds up the podium at 630 units and 3.2%.

ZAZ Vida

Within the Top 10, notable performers include the Renault Logan up 9 ranks on July to #5 and the Hyundai Elantra stable at an excellent 7th place vs. #11 year-to-date. #1 last month, the Geely CK falls 5 ranks to a still very robust #6 with 437 sales and 2.2% and stays #10 year-to-date. The Nissan Qashqai knocks at the Top 10′s door at #11 vs. #17 year-to-date while the ZAZ Vida, a rebadged previous generation Chevrolet Aveo, breaks into the Ukrainian Top 20 for the first time at its 6th month of sales, up 8 spots to #18. Notice also the Honda CR-V up to #19 vs. #42 year-to-date and the Geely Emgrand EC7 at a very solid #20.

MG 350

There is one newcomer in the Top 200: the MG 350, selling 14 units for its first full month of sales in Ukraine at #193. Other Ukrainian oddities include the Bogdan 2110, a rebadged Lada 110 discontinued in Russia, at #53, the GAZ 3302 at #64, the Chery E5/Elara up 110 spots to #126…

UAZ 3962

…the 27 year-old UAZ 3962 at #131 with 32 units, the Lifan X60 at #239 with 7 sales, the Saipa Tiba with 4 units, the Samand LX with 125 sales year-to-date (#179) – both imported from Iran – and the Geely GX7 appearing for the first time in the ranking with one unit sold in August.

Answering about Logans. Our cars come from Romania plant, it was only a few months ago that Dusters, Stepways and automatic-version Logans/Sanderos started being shipped from Moscow. Renault plans to move us to the Russian exports totally, except for dCi and LPG models which aren’t assembled at autoframos. The move from Dacia to Renault was purely badge engineering, it happened near the implementation of Phase2 Logan and Sandero here, there’s a very limited amount of those cars branded as Dacia because the change happened in a few months or so. From that point to the recent times when we started importing Russia-manufactured cars we had a healthy couple of years when the import were 100% Romanian while the badge was already Renault, therefore the two just doesn’t relate. It’s only a matter of customers who distrust Dacias because they have never heard about them.

Just returned from Ukraine – interesting that older Logans are badged as Dacia, but newer models as Renault. Why the change, especially given Ukraine is a neighbouring counyry to Dacia’s homeland of Romania?

      Hi Andy,
Thanks for this insight, I wasn’t aware of it. My guess would be that the source of imports to Ukraine for the Logan has switched from Romania to Russia where Logans are sold as Renaults. But if anyone living in Ukraine could confirm that would be great!
      cheers
