Ukraine July 2012: HISTORICAL – The Geely CK in pole position

A very round 22,000 new vehicles found a buyer in Ukraine in July, bringing the year-to-date total to 111,379 units. Now. This is big. Last month I brought your attention to the fine performance of Great Wall in Bulgaria where the Chinese company has started production, a first for a Chinese manufacturer in Europe. However this month it is Geely that is writing history:

For the first time ever, a Chinese model is the best-seller in any country outside China.

The Geely CK sells 723 units in Ukraine in July for a 3.3% market share, up a huge 19 spots on June, outstripping the Skoda Octavia at 2.8% and the Hyundai Accent, #1 in June, at 2.7%. The only precedent for a Chinese model overseas was the #1 spot of the Great Wall Wingle last November in New Caledonia which is actually a French territory. Time will tell whether this is just a one-off or the start of a long term prominence of Geely models in Ukraine…

Geely is on fire this month with most models in sharp increase compared to June: the Geely Emgrand EC7 is up 34 spots to #15 with 319 sales and 1.5%, the Geely MK is back up to #20 with 260 units and 1.2%, the Geely MK-2 is down 11 spots to a still brilliant #36 vs. #68 year-to-date and the Geely SL is up 37 to #81 with 73 sales.

Other great performers in Ukraine this month include the Hyundai Elantra up a massive 19 spots on June to #7, the ZAZ Forza holding itself within the Top 10 at #9, the Nissan Qashqai up to #12 vs. #20 year-to-date, the Honda CR-V up 20 spots to #22, the ZAZ Vida at #26, the Opel Astra up 23 to #31, the Peugeot 207 in run out mode and up 110 spots to #44 and the Mercedes ML-Class up 27 to #46.

    Wow, it’s so interesting to read about my country on other sites. Thank you author for your job, keep going :)

    As for Geely CK – Yes, it’s the most accessible car on market – prices start from 6800 USD. And our bestseller Lada 2107 stopped sales a few months ago. Also as the marketing director Sergei Borovyk states, it’s not the result of one month, but a long time struggle. Besides, some cars could not be registered in june, so they waited for july. http://www.autoconsulting.ua/article.php?sid=24686

    Ukraine has its own ZAZ auto company. How is it possible that the car is the best seller is from Chinese “copy” car company?

    They invest because those cars are much cheaper than European or Japanese and Korean.

    This is interesting. Clearly, Ukrainians aren’t brand- snobs and are willing to invest in such cars from China/Asia. I have a feeling that Malaysia’s Proton would do well in this market, considering that their latest offerings are excellent value for money and are ahead of the average Chinese car. Too bad Proton isn’t interested. Yet.
