The Australian new car market continues on its insolent good run, up 6% year-on-year in August to 93,552, bringing the year-to-date total to 728,047 units, up 9% on 2011 and still on target to break the all-time record for new car sales in the country set back in 2007… We are now entering uncharted territories, with a commercial vehicle leading the models ranking for the 5th consecutive month: never has this happened in the history of automobile in Australia… The Toyota Hilux is responsible for this feat, selling 4,010 units in August for a 4.3% market share, way above the Mazda3 at 2,990 and 3.4%.
The Hilux now trails the 3 by only 573 units year-to-date and should become #1 as early as next month if it continues at its current rate. Note the Hilux is only the third model in the last 35 years with the Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore to lead the Australian monthly models ranking for at least 5 consecutive months… The Toyota Corolla is solid in third place with 2,945 sales and 3.1% while the Holden Cruze is back up 3 spots on July to #4 at 2.8%, ahead of the Commodore at 2.6%.
Boosted by the new generation to 2,130 sales and 2.3%, the Toyota Camry is up to #6, its highest ranking in Australia since December 2010. After ranking #11 twice (April, July) and #12 twice (May, June), the Mazda CX-5 finally breaks into the monthly Top 10 for the very first time at #9 with 1,679 units and 1.8% while the Ford Ranger enjoys its second consecutive month within it at #10 with 1,629 sales and 1.7%.
Further down, notice the all-new Holden Colorado up to #11, the VW Golf back up to #12, the Holden Captiva 7 up to #13 with 1,497 units and 1.6%, its highest ranking in the country since June 2011, and the Honda Civic up 12 spots to #17 with 1,360 sales and 1.5%, its highest position since January 2009…
