Qatar May 2012: Toyota Hilux takes the lead, Lexus LX #5

Qatari new car sales are on fire this year: up 71% year-on-year in May to 8,180 registrations and up 40% year-to-date at 35,401 units. While the Toyota Land Cruiser is still in pole position year-to-date with 4,020 sales and 11.4% share, it is down to #2 in May for the second month in a row at 927 units and 11.3% down from 12.2% in April and passed by the Toyota Hilux at 1,116 sales and 13.6%, a stable share on April. The Hilux is #2 year-to-date with 3,391 units and 9.6%.

Only #8 over the Full Year 2011, the Toyota Prado is up to #3 both in May at 552 sales and 6.7% and year-to-date with 1,831 units and 5.2% vs. 2.4% in 2011. The Nissan D22 is solid at #4 with 3.5% ahead of the Lexus LX, extremely impressive since the start of 2012: after two months at 3.9% share it is down to a still excellent 3.1% in May and ranks #7 year-to-date with 979 sales and 2.8%, Qatar being the LX’s best performing country in the world.

Notice also the Porsche Cayenne holding itself within the Qatari Top 20 for the second consecutive month: after ranking #16 in April with 1.2% share it is #19 this month with 85 sales and 1% and #25 year-to-date at 0.8% compared to #38 in 2011. The Ford Focus is up 99 spots on April to #31, the Nissan Qashqai is up 8 to #43, the Ford Escape is up 65 to #44 and the Renault Duster lands directly at #61 with 23 sales.
