Italy Station Wagons Full Year 2011: Opel Astra passes Ford Focus

In December the Italian Station Wagon (sw) market is down 16% to 8,906 registrations, bringing the final 2011 total to 151,203 units, down 2% in a general market down 11% with a sw market share going from 8.1% in 2010 to 9% in 2011. Italy is one of the last markets in the world to still buy station wagons en masse.

Ford Focus

In 2011, the big event is the thunderous arrival of the Opel Astra in pole position after at least 5 years of Ford Focus domination. With the station wagon version of the new generation made available in late 2010, the Astra sells 18,955 units this year, up a whopping 206% and 8 spots on 2010 while the Focus is down 26% to 13,864 units. It even struggled to keep its 2nd spot with the Audi A4 nipping at its back at 13,275 sales and an excellent 87% sw ratio, down 17%.

BMW 5 Series Touring

Other great performers this year are the VW Passat, up 93% and 3 ranks to #4 with 12,849 sales and a 88% sw ratio, the highest in the Top 10, the Opel Insignia up 6% and improving to 82% sw ratio and the BMW 5 Series, up a massive 145% to #7 at 5,245 units. Notice also the departure of the last Italian representative in the Top 10, the Fiat Croma which was was still #5 in 2010…

Audi A6 Avant

December highlights include the 2nd place of the VW Passat (+2), the 4th position of the Audi A4 with an exceptional 91% sw ratio, the BMW 5 Series up to #7 and the Audi A6 breaking into the Top 10 for the first time this year with 229 sales and 78% sw ratio.
