Car sales in Hungary have been laminated by the economic crisis: down 60% on 2008 to 61,143 registrations… This context completely reshuffles the models ranking: for only the second time in 10 years after 2003, the best-selling car in the country is not a Suzuki: it’s the Ford Focus, which had discreetly climbed the ladder over the last few years. Its drop of ‘only’ 44% over 2007 enables it to take the lead of the models ranking with 3,304 sales and 5.4% share.

The Suzuki SX4 is now the brand’s best-seller and stays #2 with sales down 65% to 2,997 units and 4.9%. It is followed by the Opel Astra, up 2 spots but down 54% to 2,561 sales and 4.2%. Leader for the last 4 years, the Suzuki Swift is down 72% to #4 and 2,442 units, just above the Suzuki Splash at 2,200 sales (-56%).

Audi A4

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

Car sales in Luxembourg are not massively affected by the economic crisis, down only 9% to 45,186 registrations. The VW Golf keeps the pole position with 2,188 sales, up 7% on last year to reach an outstanding 4.8% market share, in actual fact the only model above 3% share this year.

The Audi A4 is up 4 spots in spite of sales down 13% to reach an excellent 2nd place at 1,331 units, ahead of the VW Polo also up 4 ranks with 1,311 sales and the BMW 3 Series, down 30% to 1,230 units. For the first time in Luxembourg there are two Audis in the Top 5 with the Audi A3 up 3 spots to #5 with 1,161 sales. Notice the BMW 1 Series down 36% to #6.

The Lithuanian car market is really affected by the economic crisis: down 66% on 2008 at 7,515 registrations. But like in Estonia, one model makes a joke of this drop by gaining 411% year-on-year and multiplying its market share by 14: the Renault Megane, best-seller in Lithuania in 2009 with 526 sales and 7% share.

The Nissan Qashqai stays 2nd and improves its share to 3.6% thanks to ‘only’ 60% less sales than last year at 269 units. #1 for the last two years, the Skoda Octavia falls to #3 with 254 sales, down 79%. It is followed by the Toyota Avensis (-62%), Toyota Auris (-54%) and Peugeot 308 (-63%). Notice the Renault Scenic up 123% to #7.

Renault Megane

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

Estonian car sales crumble to the ground this year at -60% and 9,946 registrations. But the market leader absolutely ignored this trend: the Renault Megane, significantly helped by the new generation now on sale, gained 182% on 2008 at 710 sales and saw its market share multiplied by 7 to 7.1%. In 2nd place, the Skoda Octavia lost 46% but gained 3 spots and one percentage point of market share to 398 units and 4%.

Last year’s leader, the Mazda6, is down to #3 at 335 units, down 69%, and is followed by the Toyota Avensis (-63%) and the Renault Scenic landing directly in 5th place with 276 sales and 2.8% for its first year in Estonia. The Toyota Corolla is up 4 ranks to #6 and the Hyundai i30 is the other newcomer in the Top 10 at #7.

Germany 2009: Scrappage scheme sends models ranking wild

January 29th, 2010 No comments

Skoda Fabia

* See the Top 100 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Florian *

To counter the financial crisis, a cash-for-clunkers scheme was put in place in Germany this year, benefitting mainly small and affordable cars. As a result, the market is up 23% to reach 3,807,175 units, the 2nd best year ever in the country after 1991, and things happened to the models ranking that no one in their right mind would have predicted, and that will probably never happen again.

Example 1: The Skoda Fabia (previous best: #10) ranks #2 twice this year and peaks at 15,453 sales and 3.9% share in March. It finishes the year at #5 with 103,645 sales, the first time a half-German model (Skoda being owned by VW) sells over 100,000 units here in a single year.

Fiat Panda

Example 2: Fiat has a surreal year. The Panda, down to 5,990€, ranks 4th in March with 12,457 sales and 3.1% share. This is the best position and monthly volume ever for a (true) foreign model, beating the #6 and 12,385 sales delivered by the Renault 19 in March 1993 – still holding the record share at 3.4% that month. It is #15 over the full year at 59,114 units, up 298% on 2008. The Grande Punto is #7 in March at 9,764 units and 2.4% and #21 in 2009 at 53,111 units, up 157% year-on-year.

Dacia Sandero

Example 3: The Dacia Sandero is #7 in May with 9,189 sales and 2.4%, the best-ever figures for a Romanian model in Germany. It is #22 in 2009 with 51,292 units, up 705% year-on-year. The Dacia Logan also reaches its best in May at #26 with 4,382 sales and 1.1%.

Peugeot 207

More examples: The Peugeot 207 reaches a best-ever 8th place with 8,853 sales and 2.3% in April – albeit not the best-ever French performance: the Renault 19 was #6 in March 1993. However the Japanese, Korean and Spanish records are all broken this year, respectively with the Nissan Micra at #12 in December, the Hyundai i30 at #13 and the Seat Ibiza at #16, both in February.

Back to the general ranking. At least there are no surprises at the very top: the VW Golf is the best-selling model in Germany for the 29th year in a row. The 6th generation is much more loved than its predecessor, even staying above 11% market share for 4 consecutive months and peaking at 12% in September and a whopping 44,280 sales in just one month, June (these shares include the Golf Plus and Jetta). Its year-end 287,984 sales figure, up 66% on 2008, is the best since 2000 for the Golf nameplate.

The VW Polo was relaunched in June and reaches a best-ever year-end 2nd spot with 109,005 sales, but the surprise is the extremely strong end-of-career of the previous generation: #2 at 17,577 units and 4.4% in March! The Opel Corsa takes the 3rd spot at 106,980 sales, peaking at #2, 14,486 units and 3.8% in April, and the Opel Astra is 4th and peaks at 14,284 sales and 3.7% in May.

Iceland 2009: Suzuki Swift and Subaru Legacy top dismal market

January 29th, 2010 No comments

Suzuki Swift

* See the Top 60 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

2009 is ‘annus horribilus’ for car sales in Iceland, the market contracting by 89% year-on-year at its worst around mid-year, finishing at -76% and 2,570 registrations… In this context and for the first time in at least a decade, the best-selling model in the country is not a Toyota! The Suzuki Swift holds the pole position in Iceland in 2009 thanks to sales up a bewildering 41%, however with 151 units sold it is the weakest figure for a #1 in a long while…

Subaru Legacy

The Subaru Legacy manages to lose ‘only’ 46% at 137 units and jumps up to #2, ahead of the Suzuki Vitara at #3 with 115 sales (-40%) and the Toyota Land Cruiser 120/150 at #4 and 101 units (-79%!). The Honda CR-V (-54%), Toyota Yaris (-87%), Auris (-78%), and Subaru Forester (-62%) follow while the Isuzu D-Max is up 20 spots to #9 thanks to a loss of ‘just’ 45% and the Nissan Patrol brilliantly breaks into the Icelandic Top 10, up 30 ranks to #10 at -32% only.

January 27th, 2010 No comments

Very significant turnaround in the 2009 Czech best selling models ranking: after 9 years of uninterrupted Skoda Fabia domination, the new generation Skoda Octavia, launched early in the year, sees its sales fly up 72% to become the best selling car in the country for the very first time. Argentina 2009: Chevy Corsa new leader, 207 Compact #2

January 27th, 2010 No comments

Chevrolet Corsa

New car sales drop 16% in 2009 in Argentina at 515,008 registrations. Big changes atop the models ranking: the VW Gol is no longer the best selling car in Argentina. That is if we follow the official ACARA statistic that separate sales of the 4th gen Gol (#3 at 21,254 units) and those of the new, 5th gen Gol called Gol Trend in Argentina (#4 at 20,547 sales). The two versions add up to 41,801 sales which would earn them the first place.

Instead, the Chevrolet Corsa takes the lead at 5.4% of the market, in spite of sales dropping by 22%. The Peugeot 207 Compact (aka 206+) follows the tracks of the 206 and ranks #2 with 23,932 sales (4.6%). The Toyota Hilux stays #5, followed by the Ford Ecosport (+1 spot) and the VW Suran (+2 spots). Notice the Ford Ka at #11 (+9 spots) and the Renault Sandero at #14 (+ 27 spots).
