Excellent year for new car sales in Australia, up 10% to 616,256 registrations, or nearly back to its 1990 level (617,298). After two years of Ford Falcon domination, the Holden Commodore reclaims the top spot in 1994 with sales up a massive 20% to 75,330 units and 12.2% market share thanks to a new model now available. The Falcon also progresses faster than the market, up 12% to improve its market share to 11.8% thanks to 72,924 sales.

Hyundai Excel (UK version)

Faithful to the third position for the 4th consecutive year, the Mitsubishi Magna/Verada breaks the 40,000 annual units barrier for the first time in Australia at 40,473 units and 6.6% share, up 7% year-on-year. In fact the rest of the Top 6 is unchanged with the Toyota Camry/Vienta at #4 (+10%), the Corolla at #5 (-8%) and the Hilux at #6 (+11%). The Hyundai Excel continues to break records, up a further 3 spots and a huge 48% on 1993 to #7 with 17,107 sales and 2.8% share.

Outside the Top 10, the Holden Barina (+3 to #11) and Rodeo (+4 to #12) impress, the Mazda 121 catches on its twin the Ford Festiva, up 46% and 8 ranks to #16 vs. #14. the Mazda 323 is up 60% to #19, the Honda Accord up 92% to #21, the BMW 3 Series up 42% to a record #23 and the Holden Statesman/Caprice up 216% to #32 thanks to the new model.

The ute (Aussie for pick-up) versions of the two best-sellers also do extremely well: the Ford Ute is up 40% to #20 and the Holden Ute is up 47% to #25. Finally, among the newcomers in the Top 50 this year, notice the Hyundai Sonata up to #44 making it 3 Hyundais in the Top 50 with the Lantra at #46 and the Daewoo 1.5i up to #48, making it 4 Koreans in the Top 50…
