France 1994: Renault Clio leads, Peugeot 306 & 106 on podium

A robust government scrappage scheme enabled the French new car market to rebound by 15% on 1993 at 1,972,919 registrations this year. The Renault Clio is the best-seller for the third year in a row with 194,034 sales and 9.8%, up 12%.

The Peugeot 306 is up 3 spots to #2 for its first full year of sales at 120,778 units and 6.1% above the Peugeot 106 up 31% to 116,921 units and 5.9%. About to be replaced, the Renault 19 drops 2 spots and 9% to 4th place and 5.4%. The Renault Twingo breaks into the Top 5 with 94,667 sales and 4.8%, followed by the Citroen Xantia (+31%) and ZX (+20%) both in excellent shape.

Renault Laguna

The only newcomer in the Top 10 this year is the new Renault Laguna landing directly in 8th position with 76,623 sales and 3.9%. The Citroen AX (+42%), Peugeot 205 (+16%), Renault Supercinq (+37%) and Lada Niva (+281%) all benefit fully from the scrappage scheme. The Fiat Punto is up to #15 for its first full year of sales.
