New car sales in France are down 13% in 1984 to 1,750,800 registrations. After 10 years of reign of the Renault 5, the Peugeot 205 makes up for a shy start in 1983 and helped by the arrival of the 2-door and GTI versions it takes the lead of the models ranking with 171,702 sales and 9.8% share, the first Peugeot to be #1 since the Peugeot 204 in 1971.

Renault 11

Right in between the Renault 5 – still #1 in January and February and #3 at year-end with 122,644 sales and 7% share – and the Peugeot 205, there was an interim leader in the French market. The Renault 11 ranked #1 from March to June 1984, peaking at brilliant 10% share in April. The 11 finishes the year in 2nd place at 143,669 units and 8.2% share.

Very last month at #1 for the Renault 5 in February 1984

The Citroen BX is up 3 spots to #4 with 106,875 sales and 6.1%. Launched in March, the Renault 25 is a massive success and finishes the year in an outstanding 6th position with 70,082 sales and 4% share, the most successful large model for the brand in a very long time. The Renault Supercinq, launched in September, lands directly at #16 with 31,537 units.

The Ford Fiesta is the best-selling foreign model this year, up 3 spots to #10 with 50,773 sales and 2.9%, followed by the Ford Escort at #12, the VW Golf at #13, the Opel Corsa at #15, the Ford Sierra at #17 and the Fiat Uno at #18.

USA 1982-1984: Ford F-Series takes command

January 15th, 1985 No comments

1982 Ford F-Series

In 1982, the Ford F-Series becomes the best-selling vehicle in the USA – trucks and passenger cars included. The robust Ford pick-up would claim that title for 31 consecutive years and still holds the same spot nowadays. 1982 is therefore a very important date for the American car industry and the start of a legendary domination that is still in place today…

I don’t have detailed data for this period in the US so if you do please make sure to get in touch!

South Africa 1984: Toyota Corolla starts its reign

Toyota Corolla

* See ‘Read more’ for the Top 10 best-selling models, thanks to Miguel for the data! *

In 1984 the Toyota Corolla is the best-selling car in South Africa, in what could be the start of a 20-year long reign. I only have intermediary rankings for the period (1986, 1988, 2000, 2004 and 2005) but they all show the Corolla at #1 so this could mean the model has stayed atop the ranking in South Africa for 21 years… If you know this info for sure please comment on this post.

Toyota Cressida

BMW 3 Series

Toyota manages a 1-2 this year with the Cressida at #2, followed by the BMW 3 Series – very interesting to see a model that expensive so high in the ranking – the Ford Sierra and Escort. The Mercedes 200/300 ranks 6th, notice the appearance of the Renault 9 in 9th place.

The Amby is considered the definitive Indian car and was the most popular car in India for no less than 35 years, from around 1950 to 1984! Nearly 4 million units have been produced overall.

I couldn’t access any official car sales data for this period so if you have any please get in touch. More info on the Hindustan Ambassador here, more pictures below.

Fiat Uno

* See the Top 15 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Andrea *

The Italian car market is up 3% this year at 1,636,363 registrations. Unsurprisingly, the Fiat Uno is numero uno again with sales up a massive 35% year-on-year at 331,050 units and 20.2% market share, for the first time above 20% at year-end. Even though it drops 19% on 1983, the Fiat Panda is up one spot to #2 with 126,650 sales and 7.7%.

Fiat Regata

For its first full year of sales, the Fiat Regata delivers a mammoth 110,700 units for a 6.8% market share, edging past the Fiat Ritmo down 27% to 110,550 sales. This would remain the Regata’s best year. The Autobianchi A112 is in good shape at #5, up 14% to 67,500 units and 4.1% (this should be its best year too), followed by the VW Golf, best-selling foreign model in 6th place with 59,600 sales and 3.6%. The Alfa Romeo 33 is the best new entrant in the Top 10, landing directly at #7 with 50,700 sales and 3.1%

Sweden 1984: Last year of reign for the Volvo 200

January 1st, 1985 No comments

Volvo 245

* See ‘Read more’ for the Top 23 best-selling models! Many thanks to Torbjörn for the data *

Swedish consumers bought 231,121 cars in 1984, possibly the country’s best year so far. The Volvo 200 maintains its stranglehold over the market with 38,500 sales for a 16.7% market share, however the arrival of its replacement the Volvo 740 this year means it is the last time the 200 tops the ranking.

The Saab 900 lodges another excellent year at 22,505 units and 9.7% share, its 6th consecutive time in 2nd position, and it goes the same for the VW Golf/Jetta, on the podium again with 13,895 sales and 6%. The Volvo 700 is gearing up at 13,608 units and 5.9%, ahead of the Ford Escort , Volvo 300 (both at 4.5%), Opel Kadett (4%) and Ford Sierra (2.9%).

The Saab 900 3-door is renamed 90 and lands directly in 9th position with 5,924 sales and 2.6%, just above the Mazda 323, again the best-selling Japanese car in Sweden at #10 and 5,911 units. Other Japanese models in the Top 20 are the Mazda 626 (#13) and Toyota Corolla (#17).
