New car sales in Kuwait limit their fall over the First Half of 2018 to -1% to 47.729 registrations, but this evolution becomes positive (+3%) if we count the same set of manufacturers year-on-year, in effect removing the VW and BMW Groups from the 2017 figures as they have stopped reporting in the region this year.  The Top 2 carmakers both vastly outpace the market with a 16% surge each: Toyota sees its share improve from 26% to 30.6% and Mitsubishi from 8.7% to 10.3%, bypassing Nissan (-3%) in the process. The remainder of the Top 10 its unchanged on H1 2017, led by Kia (-11%), Chevrolet (-20%) and Hyundai (-36%) all falling heavily while Honda (+20%) and GMC (+7%) post the largest gains. Further down, notice Chrysler (+1148%), SAIC MG (+168%), Renault (+61%), Aston Martin (+57%) and Land Rover (+42%) all posting spectacular improvements.

Mitsubishi Pajero sales are up 60% year-on-year in Kuwait.

Model-wise, the Toyota Prado (-8%) is headed towards an 8th consecutive annual win in Kuwait despite a worrying drop, just as the remainder of the Top 7 all post extraordinary gains: the Nissan Sunny (+169%), Mitsubishi Pajero (+60%), Toyota Land Cruiser (+54%), Corolla (+54%), Camry (+40%) and Hilux (+27%). Notice also the Nissan Sentra (+1230%), GMC Sierra (+86%), Honda Civic (+85%) and Toyota RAV4 (+54%) also very dynamic in the Top 25 while below, the Chevrolet Equinox is the only recent launch (<12 months) to crack the Top 50 at #50, above the Range Rover Velar (#63), MG ZS (#98) and Suzuki Swift DZire (#121).

After dropping 26% in 2016, the Kuwaiti new car market loses another 11.5% in 2017 to 101.772 registrations. Toyota doubles the market fall at -22% and sees its share thaw from 33.2% in 2016 to 29.4% now, still almost three times the amount of the #2, Mitsubishi surging 18% to go from 7.5% of the market to a round 10% and knocking Nissan (-17%) down to #3. Toyota seems to have absorbed most of the market’s decline as Honda (+47%), Ford (+38%), GMC (+10%), Chevrolet (+9%) and Kia (+3%) all post healthy gains in the Top 10. Hyundai (-38%) isn’t that lucky. Further down, Dodge (+64%), SAIC (+47%), Ram (+37%), Suzuki (+31%), Cadillac (+18%), Jeep (+16%) and Acura (+12%) also shine.

The Mitsubishi Pajero soars 22% to climb to 2nd place overall.

Model-wise, the Toyota Prado celebrates 7 consecutive years in the Kuwaiti pole position despite a steep 19% drop to 8.8% share. That’s still a very comfortable advantage on the Mitsubishi Pajero up 22% and three spot to #2 at 4.8%, followed closely by the Toyota Camry (-23%) and Toyota Land Cruiser (-1%). The Chevrolet Tahoe edges up 5% and gains three ranks to round up the Top 5 ahead of the Toyota Corolla (-21%), Nissan Patrol (-30%) and Toyota Hilux (-50%). The Kia Sportage is up 12% to climb up to #10, the Nissan X-Trail is up 22% to #12, the Nissan Sunny is up 117%, the Dodge Charger up 92% and the Honda Civic up 366%. The Nissan Kicks is the only all-new launch to manage a Top 50 ranking this year at #47, well above the MG360 (#93), Dodge Neon (#129) and Range Rover Velar (#130).

Kuwait August 2017: Mitsubishi Pajero leaps to #1, market back up 10%

The Mitsubishi Pajero is the best-selling vehicle in Kuwait in August.

* See the Top 43 All-brands and Top 100 models by clicking on the title *

New car sales in Kuwait are on the mend in August: up 10% year-on-year to 9.386 registrations, with the year-to-date tally now down just 6% at 66.847 units. Market leader Toyota grows slower at +4% but achieves a very high share at 34.2% vs. 27.9% (-18%) so far in 2017. The hero of the month is without contest Mitsubishi, up 149% year-on-year in August to an outstanding 20.1% market share vs. 11% year-to-date, leaping to the 2nd spot YTD also. This performance is in great part due to the Pajero, up 174% for the month to take the leadership of the Kuwaiti models ranking with 13.2% share, but also the Lancer EX up 204% to #5 and the Mirage up 20-fold to #13. Kia (+2%) is propelled to third place overall, outpacing Chevrolet (-10%) and Nissan (-27%). GMC surges 80% to 6th place, Honda is up 26% and Ford up 5-fold at #10. Further down notice Dodge up 34%. Volkswagen up 35%, Jeep up 48%, Isuzu up 114% and Cadillac up 151%.

The Yukon XL helps GMC up 80% in Kuwait in August.

Model-wise, below the Pajero the Toyota Prado is stable but significantly down in terms of market share at 7.6% vs. 8.9% year-to-date, where it remains by far in the lead even though the Pajero jumps to #2 YTD solely thanks to its August performance. The Toyota Land Cruiser impresses and almost doubles its sales at +92%, whereas the Corolla (-10%), Camry (-18%) and Hilux (-42%) struggle. The Toyota Coaster is up 193% to #8 and the Chevrolet Tahoe up 26% to #9. Notice also the Toyota RAV4 up 117% to #14, the Nissan Patrol up 83% to #15 and the GMC Yukon XL up 36-fold (!) on its August 2016 score to #17. The Nissan Kicks isn the most popular recent launch (<12 months) but barely manages a Top 50 ranking at #46.

The Kuwaiti new car market brakes down 11% over the First Half of 2017 to 48.370 registrations, and over the period we witness a certain fragmentation of the market towards smaller brands as the Top 2 best-sellers both fall at almost 3 times the rate of the market: Toyota is down 28% to see its market share plunge from 32% to 26% and Nissan is down 26% from 12.2% a year ago to 10.2% of the market so far in 2017. Mitsubishi declines 8%, resulting in a slight share improvement to 8.7% while Kia sees its volume actually go up 15%, jumping up two spots to #4 and 8.6%. Honda (+41%) and Ford (+10%) are the only two other gainers in the Top 12. Below, Suzuki (+27%), Dodge (+111%), Jeep (+23%), Volkswagen (+27%), Cadillac (+18%), SAIC (+65%) and Maserati (+75%) all impress.

The Hyundai Tucson is up 100% to #10.

In the models ranking, the Toyota Prado remains by far the most popular and follows the market at -12% to 9.15 share. In fact the Top 7 best-selling models fall faster than the market, resulting here too in a fragmentation of the market. The Mitsubishi Pajero (-19%) and Toyota Camry (-34%) complete the podium ahead of the Toyota Land Cruiser (-41%), Nissan Patrol (-25%), Toyota Hilux (-32%) and Chevrolet Tahoe (-31%). The Hyundai Elantra (+30%) and Tucson (+100%) are the only two nameplates gaining ground in the Top 10, followed by the Nissan Altima (+70%) at #11. Notice also the Kia Cerato up 81%, the Chevrolet Impala up 102%, the Kia Sorento up 170% and the Dodge Charger up 168%. The Nissan Kicks (#64) is the most popular newcomer, followed by the Cadillac XT5 (#88) and Infiniti Q30 (#92).

New car sales in Kuwait slow down their fall in 2017 at -8% over the first four months of the year to 35.089 units. Market leader Toyota underperforms at -22% to fall to a still ultra-dominant 26.4% share, with Nissan also falling heavily at -19% but lodging a 11.9% share, over two percentage points higher than its FY2016 level of 9.8%. Inside the Top 6, Mitsubishi (+2%), Kia (+2%) and Hyundai (+1%) manage to post small increases and improve their market share, but the most impressive in the Top 10 are Honda (+37%) and Ford (+45%) improving drastically. Further down, notice Dodge up 3-fold to #14, Volkswagen up 78% to #18, Peugeot up 41%, Isuzu up 43% and Jaguar up 65%.

#1 for the past 6 years, the Toyota Prado continues to dominate the Kuwaiti sales ranking with over 10% of the market so far this year, but it’s the only stable nameplate in the Top 10. The Mitsubishi Pajero is up two spots on its FY16 ranking to land at an excellent 2nd place with 4% share, the Nissan Patrol moves the same way to #3 and the Toyota Land Cruiser is up 3 to #4#4, making the Top 4 solely composed of largest SUVs. The Toyota Camry falls to #5 but is now teased for the title of #1 passenger car in Kuwait by the Nissan Altima up from #24 in FY16 directly to #6. The Nissan X-Trail also improve dramatically from #16 to #8, with the Nissan Sunny (#44 to #15), Ford Taurus (#90 to #28) and Mitsubishi Montero Sport (#128 to #32) very dynamic.
