Switzerland Full Year 2025: First win for the VW Tiguan

Swiss new car sales drop -2.4% year-on-year in 2025 to 233,737 units. 4×4 sales are off -5% to 118,342 and 50.6% share vs. 52% in 2024. Petrol registrations are down -19.8% to 55,732 and 23.8% share vs. 29% last year, diesel recedes -29.2% to 15,953 and 6.8% share vs. 9.4%, HEVs edge up 2.6% to 82,603 and 35.3% share vs. 33.6% (this includes MHEVs), PHEVs are up 25.9% to 26,189 and 11.2% share vs. 8.7% and BEVs progress 15.4% to 53,250 and 22.8% share vs. 19.3% in 2024.

In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (+6.4%) improves its market share by one percentage point to 11%. It ranked #1 eight times this year vs. 7 in 2024. Skoda (+5.6%) overtakes BMW (-6.5%) to #2 and ranked #1 in February and October. The Czech manufacturer reaches a record 9.5% share for the year. BMW for its part ranked #1 in January (with a record 11.7% share) and April. Mercedes (-6.2%), Audi (-4.2%) and Toyota (-7.6%) camp on their 2024 ranking from #4 to #6. Dacia (+12.9%), Hyundai (+5.8%) and Renault (+2.1%) all defy the negative market in the remainder of the Top 10. Notice also Cupra up 39.5% and outselling sister brand Seat (-28.1%) for the first time, MG up 477.5%, Polestar up 77.9% and BYD up 2102.3%. Tesla is down -27.8%.

Over in the models charts, the VW Tiguan (+9.7%) lodges its first ever annual win with 2.2% share, confirming Switzerland is the most fragmented market in the world. The Tiguan overtakes the Tesla Model Y, which had been #1 for the three previous years. The Mercedes GLC (-1.2%) is up one spot to #3. The fight for the #1 YTD position was fierce this year, with the GLC leading at end June and the Model Y at end September. The Tiguan led three times (May, July and November), the Model Y four times (March, June, September and December when it was up 111%) and the GLC once, in April. Other winners are the BMW X3 (January), Audi Q3 (February), VW Polo (August) and Skoda Elroq (October), the best-selling 2025 launch at #8. The VW Golf (+22.4%) rallies back up six spots to #4 while the Skoda Kodiaq (+13.3%) is up three to #5.
